parts I.D. ::: will this fit?

i'm looking to replace the steering box on my '85 300td...
i've got a box i bought from somebody, but the part # doesn't match up.

recommended part for my wagon seems to be 1234605801.
part number on the "replacement" is 1164610401...but i can't find an application for it anywhere online.

can anybody look it up to see what it fits?
know if it'll fit my w123 wagon?

I checked EPC and the 116 number doesn't come up anywhere. The 123 number is the correct one and no replacement number is suggested.

Hi,
Google tells us (in 'bout 0.1 seconds!) it's a steering box from a W107. If it fits I'd guess it'd be fine...
Good luck
Giles

The same search returns an entry from a junk yards online database, they have that exact part listed as pulled from a 1985 240D W123 so it should fit.

your sources

OP here.
i should have been more clear.
how about this:

"a google search turns up 11 results, ALL of which are in foreign languages. more than half of those results are foreign eBay listing results by private citizens, whose application listings vary, and are unreliable for obvious reasons (ignorance, conflict of interest, etc). the remaining results have little (and conflicting) information.

before i disable my vehicle and begin an involved replacement procedure of a vital component with this relatively "mysterious" part-numbered steering box, does anyone on this forum have a parts list or resource that can give reliable results? secondarily, does anyone have any ideas why google results related to it are so minimal and competely in foreign languages?"

how's that? like it better than the original? ;)

Lee, my name is Chris Brown I own C & M Hydraulics all we do is remanufacture MBZ power steering gearboxes, p/s pumps, and air (smog) pumps with electro-magnetic clutches, we have been in bus. since 1994. The number you have is a casting number only. That casting will fit 107, late 114,115, 116, 123. The 123 box has internal stops in it, if you put any other box in a 123 the tires will rub on the brake track rod support. I can help you ID the box, give me a call if you like. 702.734.8090

Me too. My source is the bildelsbasen.se-link found on google, it's in Swedish and says your part no. was pulled from a 85 W123 240D.
The german eBay auctions also indicate this box was used in the W123-chassis.

resolution!

thanks to Chris Brown over at C&M hydraulics for giving me the straight dope. The 116 number was only a casting number, but doesn't necessarily describe what's going on internally in the box, so there's NO WAY to tell from that number whether it will work properly on my wagon.

To all who follow:
There's another number on a little metal flat plate on the outside of your box that can be used to determine application.
If the first two numbers/letters are 3V, AK, or A*, the box WILL WORK on your W123.

Mine happens to be A*, so I'm good to go!

Let us know how it goes. Kudos to Chris Brown for steering you in the right direction (pun intended) :)
