Texas is not a surrender-plates state; seller is a moron. 182k on the odo, and he wants $12000 but he can't even tell you what model the car is? I can only imagine the number of "patches" he has put on the car to make it presentable.

Yeah, and cracked seats, far from "100%" condition . . . good thing he is not in a hurry to sell his SD!

It takes all kinds . . .

Really!?!

I emailed this guy bringing skepticism to the table...and I basically asked him 2 questions

1) It's a 300SD right? (Obviously...)
2) 40 MPG? No way....

And THIS is what he told me and I quote:

Its an SD, but noone searches for 300SDs.

"On the highway it gets 40mpg @ 70mph. When I was in college with a 82
300d would set the cruise on 75mph and drive all night from buford to
boston and only have to stop in NJ for gas by the time I hit
commonweath ave I still had over 1/4 tank left. If you hit traffic in
every city, you will have to stop in VA AND RI. I did that trip every
other month for four years.

I've driven them from Miami to Boston dozens of times sir. The reason
you are not observing 40+mpg is most likey a driving style issue.

The 190D gets 37mpg highway manufacturer certified. If you dont lean
on those you can get 40mpg, and (if you are lucky enough to find one)
the grey market manual transmission 190s can get you 50+mpg. If they
let the Smart Fortwo diesel here you would be getting 70mpg.

Fuel:

Ordinary Diesel fuel, usually 20 cents per gallon cheaper than regular
when you know where to buy it. Extraordinary cruising range eliminates
the need for every one out of three fuel stops compared to a gasoline
car. Unlike hybrids there are no batteries to replace for $4,000 in a
few years when they fail after the warranty expires.

Popular among Hollywood's jet set, even Daryl Hannah drives a much
crummier Diesel car as you can read here.

EPA rated 30 MPG city, 34 MPG highway here. Ken Rockwell gets 30 MPG
around town and 37 to 38 MPG on long trips! Ken has seen as high as 42
MPH when others drove the car at a sustained speed of 85 MPH returning
from Utah along Interstate 15 for about 700 miles.

California emissions certified by Mercedes-Benz. As an environmentally
sound alternative fuel vehicle it is exempt from California's smog
check annual emission testing requirements."

Did he just say NO ONE searches for a 300SD?

Wow, he's got so much anecdotal evidence that it MUST be true - a w116 300SE can get 40+ mpg!

I'm not saying I believe it, I just gave him the benefit of the doubt.

I might be some sort of newb, but even I don't think that's possible, unless he spends all his driving being towed or something...

Not to worry, that's not rust......and it's sure not even worth mentioning on this car.

The car is legally safety inspected in Texas through March 30th 2010. The car's obviously been footballed around the south and southwest.

It's a very nice car worth up to $6K in my book. No less than $4K, if everything works as it should. I'd like to own it, great exterior color, and very good miles if accurate.

The seller is putting out false information that blows any credibility he had. His ad in the Atlanta Craigslist drones about stuff that doesn't even need to be stated when selling this car.

Nonetheless the car would probably be a great find, if the moron didn't double the price it should bring. You can only laugh at a seller like him.

Unless he gets it. Then it's him laughing.

You make a great point.

There may be someone out there that would pay him $10K or more......they would have my sympathy for paying him that much......

This thread reminds me of one a couple years ago (it was dug up for me, now I can't find it). It was a 18 year old guy selling gorgeous cars under false names...no real reason to use the false names and the cars were legit, but a lot of people ran away from the credibility. It was quite a fun read though I wish I could find it again.

I remember that guy... Darn, can't remember his name though. Wasn't it around the Pennsylvania area?

Anyways, the license plate surround, Maurices Mercedes, has been on a few cars I've seen on fleabay. I kept this pic, because I'm about 30% sure that the plate number is familiar also.

Yeah....I thought he would have certainly REMOVED the plastic water bottles from the console BEFORE shooting the picture!

We all know this kind of seller....

perhaps you misread my post. a 240d wagon is a 240TD. it hauled 5000 not 500.
