usable electric fuel pump?
I have been having problems with my fuel pump on my 300cd. I have been contemplating getting an electric fuel pump, but my mechanic friend said they usually don't use them on diesels because of the high flow requirement, and more viscus fuel.
Have you tried using electric? Suggestions?

What problems are you having? It is a very simple device, the problem is usually something else.
Get a used one. It should be under $25 from a junkyard or I'm sure a forum member would be happy to sell you a spare one. |

It's actually been a heck of a process so far. Here are the events so far:
1. saw air bubbles in the return hose. 2. hooked up clear hose to see that there is a leak after but not before the pump. 3. changed the crush-washers 4. totally routed the hoses around the pump, not using it (no air in return, ran fine, just lack of power) 5. put new pump on (now have the air leaking again) I am at a total loss right now. I am thinking of taking to a good german mechanic in the area, but he can't see it for a week or two. He has also never heard of anything like that happening before (let alone the car running without a fuel pump).

I have not worked in a fuel injection shop since 1986 but they used to have a rebuild kits for the fuel supply pump. It had the 2 new valves, valve springs where needed and and all the needed "O" rings and copper washers. You would have to go/call to your local fuel injection shop and ask them. I have not seen them selling on the internet anywhere not even on Ebay.

I would have actually preferred the rebuild kit, but I already bought a brand new one. I actually never heard of the rebuild kit. Oh well.

Now that I think of it they I have only seen rebuild gasket kits for the Bosch VE fuel injection pumps like the ones that go on VW rabbits for sale. None for other vehicles. |

My car is running, but I am worried that with all this air, I am putting unneeded strain on the injector pump. I know my engine doesn't appreciate it one bit!

On another forum, the choice for Ford IDI's is the Holley Red fuel pump. And it has been used on the 6.9 and 7.3 successfully.

Diesel Flow Requirement
Wouldn't the diesel flow requirement be less for a diesel than a gas engine that gets less fuel mileage???? You don't need much of a pump to get at most 3 gallons of flow per hour unless you are running 90 mile an hour... Jim

if you are drawing in bubbles, you may have a plugged air vent in your fuel tank. does your filler cap suck in air when you open it? check the passenger's tire well for a bell shaped doodad and see that it is clear of mud etc.

Jim, it's for my 300cd ('85). Also, that's what I am trying to figure out...flow requirements.
vstech, I will check the air vent in the morning when it gets light, but I also have a veggie oil system in the car, and that is drawing air too. Do you guys think this would be overkill? $110 JC Whitney http://www.holley.com/12-801-1.asp Thanks for the help guys.

There's a cheaper one, for about $30-$40, from NAPA that works well.

Don't cobble it up any more. Fix the leak, the pump is probably not the problem at all.

The holly flows 97 gallons per hour and it is not compatible with a fuel injection system... Read the specs...
Normally where ever you have air leaks between the tank and the small filter you will have a fuel leaks at some point in time... I would look very closely in the mechanical fuel pump area... Jim
