I got my backup unit with your name on it! Just got to get the mounting hardware.

Thanks,
Exactly! I sometimes travel to areas where ice is a major problem during the winter. I like to keep tabs on the temperature.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the nice writeup.

I been looking at these things on FleaBay. I noticed the guts in back of the one made for the w201 are really slim. I cant tell by a pic if the height and width are the same as the 126 version.

Since my car has no power windows, do you think the larger one would fit easily?

I want Fahrenheit. Doing the math as I drive would be exceedingly dangerous for me.

Besides, the world seems colder in Celsius.

Right now the one for the 190 is the cheapest Fahrenheit display on FleaBay, so I'm thinking of snagging it.
EDIT: Actually the 126F was cheapest, I put in a bid. Looks like the 201 might attach differently.

Nice write up.

Not to hijack, but to ask a related question - i already have one installed, but the LCD decided to explode. Now my unit is a black smudge rather than a readable display.

Is Fleabay or a PNP the only place to get these units?

Thumbs up Yes

DeliveryValve, great documentary.

Definitely a plus for this forum.

I like the fact that the temp is more visible than the other cluster lights.

The temp gauge is what I habitually refer to on my W123 after using my other Mercs, too bad my W123 has no temp gauge !! But its not critical on that car....

Not sure if the w201 version will fit in the cluster slot. If indeed the board is narrow then that is a plus. Because it can potentially fit better between steering column support frames. Let us know how it goes.

You might be able to get them at the dealer also. Or from babymog

Operational update.

I wanted to see what the illumination (backlight) of the display would look like if I connected it to the dimmer (rheostat) switch.
In this pic, I soldered a male electrical connector to the rheostat.

This is the results at night.

I can now dim the backlight of the display. But at full power, it is the same brightness as it was wired directly to the headlight switch. I think my original plan of going with LED instrument cluster bulbs would counteract the brightness. As show by forum member Chad300dtd in this POST. Although I don't think it is currently that bad. I can live with it for now.

The second item I want to report is the instrument cluster sticks out a bit on the top portion. It fits perfectly on the bottom and sides. The display box is getting interference from the steering column support frame. I tried fiddling with is but this is the best I can get, but I might resort to modifying the plastic back of the display box to give me more room. The suggestion that forum member billybob made on post #10 should definitely correct this issue. But I like to keep the Celsius display and I can live with it sticking out a bit.

I hope this helps.

Had to get in on the action. I wasn't surprised to see it in Celcius, but was disappointed. I was hoping for a F one. Heck, I can't even remember what I removed it from, just that it was a 126.
