AC compressor belt install, please help

Hello members, I am less experienced and short on tools so please keep things in simple language for me, BUT I would really appreciate any advice from the wise members of this forum...
My mechanic encouraged me to try installing my own new AC compressor belt. I followed directions and finally wrestled the new belt on, tightened the PS belt I had to move, tightened two of 3 bolts on the compressor, then realized the third was backed all the way out and impossible to align.
Frustration sets in.....
Now I have taken everything back apart, including taking the belts off. I finally aligned that longest third bolt. The other two are now completely loose and I still cannot get the belt around both pulleys.

Is there any trick to getting the new compressor belt on???

Should I have all 3 bolts started before attaching the belt?

Thanks

This is a 1981 300 TD
Sorry, I have now read more rules and DIY links for drive belts.
It was just fully charged with freon so I am really freaked out about losing my gas, if I haven't already.
I will try to find the correct place to loosen the hard line, any more directions?

it should not be necessary to loosen the hard line. my bet is you have the wrong size belt.
also, there is an adjuster bolt that needs to be loosened for the compressor to swing all the way in.

NOt to rub salt in the wounds, but I just installed an AC compressor belt on my SD a few days back and it was pretty easy. I would suppose we have the same setup. Took the PS pump belt off (though I recall recently reading post that showed a slick trick around that - just didn't have access to this forum when I was working). Anyhow, it seemed a pretty straightforward process. When I think it's simple --- it's gotta be simple. Maybe you could take a break and relax a bit and then look at it with a positive attitude. Again - not to rub it in but rather to encourage you to step back, chill out, and start with a positive attitude. Much easier to say than to do.

Up-date: belts good, bolts bad?

Amazingly I wrestled the belt back on; still not sure what was wrong b/c it feels loose now that is runs around both pulleys?
That is the good news, here is the bad and I am trying to be positive.

All bolts realigned, tightening the adjustment 10mm... belt still has a little play and I was told banjo string tight, then = BOOM adjustment screw broke!
I know I can find a used replacement somewhere and get everything back together, see I am staying positive.

Question: how tight should I go?
And why is a brand new belt adjusting all the way down?

Thanks for posting to me!

Make sure you have the correct size belt, humor me, compare it to the old one. And the belt should not be that tight. You should have at least a half inch of movement at the middle most point between the pulleys.
I forget the inner workings of that adjuster bolt, if you have a junk yard nearby, that may be your best option.

the new belt seemed almost exact to the old, barring slight stretching from the dry-rotted old one.

I must have over-tightened if you recommend 1/2 inch play??

FYI, the adjuster bolt is a long small bolt with eye loop on one end. Pretty simple, course now mine is two pieces

The adjuster is not essential. You can use a pry bar and tighten the large bolts.

I have 1/2 inch "play" in mine, no issues.

Not sure why the new belt goes all the way down, but as long as it works. Usually tho, it (belt) is well within the adjustment, but I recall one of those to be pretty tight.

Thanks for the encouragement. I will leave about 1/2 if and when I find the replacement adjustment bolt, which will not be all the way down past breaking. Close to that tight without right it now.
