Hmm, I've consistently gotten over 30 MPG with my sdc. You should change your diff ratio to 2.47 or if you want to go crazy 2.24. make sure your brakes arent dragging, and all your bearings are good.

Use a lighter wheel like a CLK lighter wheel = lower unsprung weight.

If all things failed. How about trying this?

Remove all dead weights - passenger seat, back seat, spare tire, jack, side mirrors or others. Duck tape all seams.

You could also remove all the glass to reduce the weight and wind resistance caused by them.

What kind of rpms will by car be running at with the different diff, on the highway?
I'm guessing around town changing the diff will make little difference?

What about bypassing the EGR valve so my engine isn't sucking in its own poop? Although I am very knowledgable regarding gas engines, I am struggling to comprehend whether hot exhaust gas in the intake would make any difference to economy or not?

I wish I would of replaced my injector when I bought my car. It idles better after changing them and mileage is up consistently over 2 mpg.

That should have been the first thing you did to the car.

Absolutely remove or defeat the EGR function and then clean up the intake manifold. After that and the other suggestions already made, remove or defeat your right foot, as it has the biggest effect on fuel economy. I can move my 87's mileage up and down several mpg just by minor adjustments in my driving style.

There are also changes that you may not be able to make, such as driving at off-peak hours to avoid sitting in traffic. Even though diesels are very economical at idle, they still consume fuel. The "stop-light grand prix" is a real fuel waster.

Other nit-picks: don't keep the ski rack on the car if you're not using it. The drag from a rack can cost you a mile per gallon or more. Keep the windows closed (not removed), especially at highway speeds, to reduce turbulence/drag.

If your car came with belly pans, make sure you still have all of them; keep them on the car tightly, not waving in the breeze under the car with half the screws missing. (My '96 came with two belly pans and I thought it was complete; only later did I discover there was a third, immediately behind the front bumper.)

I've had my 300D for 2 weeks now. Last night when coming home from work I was worried the fuel gauge was not working correctly because it was dropping too slowly. I went ahead and filled up and calculated 37.8 mpg. I drive pretty easily so that probably helps my mileage.

Overall I was pleasently surprised.

Don't be, that figure is not possible unless you were driving 35mph down the highway. There is an error somewhere, your math, expansion of the fuel (heat), odometer incorrect, wrong size tires, etc etc etc.

Could be. I keep a journal on all my cars and record fuel purchase, mpg etc. I'll keep up my books and see how my 300D does over time.

I'm getting absolutely terrible mileage in my 300D....I've driven 39.9 miles in the two years I've had it, and probably put at least 5000 gallons into the tank.....

Maybe I should go ahead and do that Odometer fix???

You must do a LOT of driving!!! 5,000 gallons at 22mpg is over 110,000 miles.....in 2 years.....55k a year.

I'm curious about this as well. I imagine the EGR will have some effect on fuel economy, but I'd love to know how much. Perhaps after I rebuild my injectors I'll do a test. On the '87, the EGR doesn't function at highway speed, so the effect will only be in city driving. I've left my EGR intact because I'd like to keep my environmental footprint small, and the difference in performance isn't important enough to me. If the fuel economy were significantly different I might reconsider... trading less CO2 against more NOx.
