1987 300SDL 126 TRAP OXIDIZER (football) RECALL

Hello,
I just got my 126 300sdl back from the Dealer for the Trap oxidzer recall . The only thing they performed is replacing the pipe elbow where the Trap Oxidizer used to be. They say thats all that is required. Does anyone have a photo of the part I beleive they were "supposed to have installed under the car called an "Oxidation catalyst" ? I have been in touch with mercedes in NJ and they keep telling me to check back with the dealer. Every posting online states that there are 2 or more items to be replaced. Also the car is alot louder from the tailpipe now that the Oxidizer is gone. Does anyone have a photo of the "new" undercar Oxidation Catalyst part? Has anyone had this recall performed and if so what did they replace?
Thank you !!

Many people on this forum, both 124 and 126 owners, have had this recall performed. For my '87 300D (W124), the entire exhaust system was replaced as well as the turbocharger, at no charge to me. (The turbocharger is supposed to be inspected as part of the recall and, if damaged due to pieces that came off of the trap oxidizer, the turbocharger is also replaced.) My car had a pretty rotten exhaust system, that's why they had to replace all of it. If your car was in really top-notch shape, they would remove the trap cat and install the replacement piece. They would also install the new catalyst (downstream of the turbocharger) and any pieces necessary to make it fit. Your dealer should have at least done that. I would try another dealer, the one you went to does not seem to have done a good job. You can use the search function on this forum to find many stories of "trap cat" work on cars like yours that have the OM603 engine.

I'm just a bit surprised that one made it this many years without having it been removed.....

Agreed. Perhaps the OP's dealer no longer has anyone on staff who remembers the procedure.

Be happy they DIDN'T replace the exhaust system. Your car will be more efficient with the exhaust is has now than with the system they replace it with.
