It costs me $50 and a couple of hours extra a year to change every 3000 miles.

Hot and often is worth the peace of mind for me.

For exact science then you need to do an oil analysis.
You change your oil every 3 months yet you use $.99 power steering fluid? To each his own I guess...

If you want to use NAME BRAND p/s oil and throw money down the drain, then it is your choice.

FYI: I do 20K miles per year and actually I change my oil sooner than 3 months, if you would like to do the math.

FYI: I use $0.99 cents per quart oil and not synthetic oil, actually it is $0.69 with after rebate. You have an issue with using cheapo.

if i was a car company making $ on mtc (which is roughly half of a dealers income, nowadays prob 75%) i would also say 3k miles...

i use rotella @5k, and run on wvo. these engines dont require porsche levels of mtc.

but to each his own, it is somewhat satisfying to change the oil. except when you check dipstick again a day later its as black as the oil that you just changed...

I see a lot of reference to gettng an oil analysis to confirm when you should change the oil or to confirm that it was the right time when you did change the oil. How much does an oil analysis cost, vs changing the oil. My guess is that it is in the range of $30 give or take $5.

Wow is right. I'm paranoid about changing my oil. I used to change it every 4500 miles or so (sort of a random interval), but changed to 3500, mostly due to my bad dreams of a dirty engine. In fact, I just bought oil/filter today to change it at 3500.

Maybe I AM, indeed, wasting my money...

Oil loses its viscosity over time. Please goggle 'oil change interval' and they always mention time is a factor. Whether it is 3 months, 4 months or 6 months, it is up to you. I change mine often as it is my preference. It only costs me $15 to change my oil and I can do it more often then synthetic oil.

If you lay up the car for 6 months, would you do an oil change even though you have done 1000 miles?

If you want exact science and don't want to WASTE any of your hard earned money then do an oil analysis and then you know EXACTLY when an oil change is due.

Well the oil you buy sits on the shelf in store for more than three months so whether it sits in engine not running or on the shelf what is the difference?

3 months is a complete waste of money. Its a marketing scam put into the minds of people through oil change shops to make more money.

My '96 E300D (W210, OM606NA) gets driven regularly but only about 8,000 miles a year and I use Mobil-1 5W-40. The oil and filter gets changed annually in November, the anniversary of the car's purchase. The engine uses only a tiny bit of oil between changes. I don't even bother measuring it, never add any. Even at 260,000 4-owner miles the oil comes back from analysis with very low numbers on contaminants/soot and no water, antifreeze, or solids. (The POs all used name-brand dino oil and changed at 7,500 mile intervals; they also drove an average of 20,000 miles a year so the oil was changed about every four months.)

I am going to stick to 5k OCI's for now and I am using Delvac 1300. Once I get comfortable with my diesel engine I may consider 10k OCI's with Delvac 1.

I do 10k OCI's in my gasoline vehicles using M1 High Mileage and a Purolator Pure One filter.
