Trying to enter the Cheap Wagon club

I went and looked at a 1980 300TD today. The fellow is asking $1000 for it. It has had a turbo engine swapped in at some time in its life. The guy is selling it because it has an intermittent no-crank issue. His "mechanic" has jerry-rigged in a goofy starter button to try to fix the problem, but it still will not crank sometimes. When the starter button is pushed the glow plug relay clicks but that's it. He claims that the neutral safety switch and ignition switch as well as the starter have been replaced, however the ignition switch looks to be old. It also needs paint on the hood, and a bit of interior work. The evil ccu servo is also bypassed. I offered $800...well see...

Do you think its a glowplug issue? You might have a running parts car there; but still prolly worth $800.

I don't think it's a glow plug issue; They all look new, and from what he said it will not crank when it has the problem. My plan is to fix it up and sell it. Wagons go for a premium around here.

I have some slightly chipped chromed center caps...two. You pay for shipping....

maybe...

IF you get the car, I think there's a car here that has that same "era" of Palamino front seat.....it may be on the passenger side. Send me a PM or email if you are interested.

And yes, I have sent seats without the frame via Greyhound.

You have to factor in the price of a new hood star to the CWC admission

I have too. I just unbolt them from the frame and then unbolt them from the hinges and lay them flat.

Good to know a turbo engine can be swapped in to a non turbo.

Some day....

I had a old junkie SD that would do this from time to time and it was the positive battery cable connection. I think it either burned up on the alternator or at the fender. Might be worth a check. It was the cable that went from a little box to the back of the alternator not the one to the battery. Sorry it has been a long time.

Wow, this is even better than the parts forum. Somebody has really monkeyed with the starter wiring...the ground wire off the battery runs off below the air filter somewhere...

The guy called me and told me that somebody had offered him $1K, but they wanted to part it out which he did not want. I told him that my offer stood at $800, but that I am planning to fix the car up. I have not heard back yet.
