96 E300D - Noisey pulleys when it rains?

I have an interesting issue. My E300D runs great---- until it rains. When water touches the car, I start to hear noise from the drive belt area that sounds like bad bearings. After it rains, and the water drys up, it will no longer make the sound. I've opened the hood, and looked for suspect, but it's almost imposible to tell which pulley it is coming from...if it is a pulley.

It seems that the humidity will cause the issue, as water doesn't leak in engine bay, at least I can't see any water.

Does anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions? Is it possible the belt is swelling and makes the noise?

Is it a rumbling type sound or a squeaking? If it is squeaking I would check for proper belt tension.

1st step is to drop the tension from the tensioning spring and rotate each pulley by hand. Very simple; don't even have to remove the belt.

How old is the belt? Had a number of vehicles that squeeked when it rained.....or was foggy and damp. A fresh new flexible belt fixed the problem most of the time. A bad pulley bearing usually will start to make noise all of the time. Spray some "belt dressing" on the belt and see if it goes away.

It's not a squeal, but more like a grinding sound.

TMAllison- that's a good idea. I think this would be a good test to see if I can find which pulley is causing the sound.

I find it interesting that this only happens when it rains.

Do you use the AC to clear the window fog when it rains and not on other days perhaps?

not really. It's a constant problem, even with the AC off. One interesting thing: When I first start the car, it will not be present. Then after a few seconds... 10 or so.... it will start real faint and then get louder.

F18: I'm not sure how old the belt is. The car has 190k on it. I bought it at 160, and all previous maintenance done on time. I'm not sure if this is something that is on the schedule or not. I'll give beltdressing a try as well. I'm sure it won't hurt. If it does, I guess it's time for a new one!

If the pulleys feel good, you can start the engine with the belt tension released. Leave the spring installed so the roller pulley stays up off the other pulley's and don't run it long as there obviously is no waterpump moving water while the belt is loose. If the sound remains that should confirm it is NOT a belt driven accessory.
