I've pulled a W123 and a W126 with my SD too, and it has the power to do it, with a proper hitch to lock the cars together it'd likely not be a problem.

So what kind of hitch or rig or attelage you use to pull a 123 with a 116 (and not a 126 like many posters seem to believe above).

I already checked many different carriers it cost more to ship a car than the car is worth!!! The estimate above of 1400 dollars is about correct.
My stuff is already on the way along with the 240D. I still have a big problem on how i am going to transport the other 2 cars (and my enormous plant collection)!
The pick up suggestion is not bad, but driving 3 times 1400miles is not my idea of fun...

Here are two more ideas:

1) Rent a box van, say 22' or 24' with a hitch and put one car in the back and tow the other on a trailer. It sounds strange but I see fleets of this exact setup flowing down to Mexico day and night. Put plenty of moving blankets all over the car in the van ( is a very good supplier for just about everything you need). If you get a dock high van then just find a warehouse that will let you drive the vehicle into the truck. You may need to crawl out of the sun roof to get in and out of the car, though.

2) Do the same thing with a flat bed. Now getting the car on and off is easier as all you need is an appropriate forklift. Your local junk yard could do that for $50 or so. With the stake sides in place you can still stack items on/around the car but less so than with the van. Plus you'll need a tarp to cover it all.

3) Call a local hot shot company. If you are willing to wait until a slot opens up you may be able to work a deal where you'll wait until they either are running empty to NJ for a load or are going up there with a partial load and still have room for your car. Usually those guys are pulling flat trailers with a light truck and the trailers are not dock high. You'll need either ramps or a forklift to get it on/off.

4) Rent a pickup, at least 3/4 ton. Pull one car on a trailer and then attach a 2 wheel car carrier to the back of that. As long as you don't exceed the legal limit (40' IIRC for Texas but other states may vary) this will work. I don't recommend it for the novice tower, though.

Remember, with towing using the SD it isn't just a matter of whether the engine has enough excess power. Is your entire drivetrain including transmission, all of the u-joint, mounts, suspension points, etc. in the condition to suddenly take twice the strain continuously for a 1400 mile trip? Plus you are starting off in fairly flat land not that much higher than sea level. Unless you are going to go down and hug the coast and add a lot of mileage to the trip you are going to be going through some somewhat high and hilly country. Now you may have up to 4 times the normal load for portions of the trip. Are you 100% positive that everything can handle this? Are all suspension and drivetrain parts past the engine relatively new?

Now look at the bumper mounting. Are you 100% positive that all of the bolts are fairly new and corrosion free? I personally had a bolt twist in half using a regular size wrench due to corrosion just last week. How about all of the body parts everything is bolted to? Have you dismantled everything and are sure that there is no hidden rust in any of the body parts?

If you were talking about towing the vehicle across town that may be a reasonable risk. On a hillside is not where you want a load that is at least 3 times the rated capacity of the vehicle (5 times if you are looking at a trailer) to break loose and start swinging you around.

I'm siding with Gene on this issue. If all else fails, sell the wagon, or leave it. There is definitely a fair chance that the strain of that kind of heavy, long distance tow could hurt the SD. Don't risk being stuck on the side of the road with two cars that don't move, could make shipping costs seem low by the time you get sorted out.

towing with 300 sd

I have a tow hitch on my 300sd 80 model, mounted to the frame and it will tow all day long, you can use a tow bar but you must make sure the bumper is in really good condition, no rust in unexpected places, I would recomend useing the tow hitch on the pulling car and a tow dolley on the towed car, you can either buy one cheaply or rent one from ryder. tow dolly is the way to go, you have more control of what you are towing.

It seems the general concensus here is that getting that TD to where you are going (safely and without destroying the SD) is going to be a relatively expensive proposition.

Unless this is one really, really, really, really nice TD, my suggestion would be sell it to a forum member locally who would appreciate it and buy another one later. There are still plenty of them around.

I doubt it. My SD towed 1.5 tons half way across the country, and towed whenever else I needed it to tow anything else.

Have you ever towed anything with your SD? -Didn't think so. LOL!

Why the Heck New Jersey ? ? ? ?

If you have a non bumper hitch and you drive moderate speeds, 55 or so you will be fine. Take in the scenery.

Why the heck are you moving from Tx. to NJ ? ? ? ?

Highest property taxes, High Sales tax, traffic conjestion, High number of Illegals, much much more.
