can anyone tell me what year/model car this engine came from?

617 951 12 027 351

Yep. 951 is the 81-85 300SD.

the 617 951 is, as stated above, is from the 81-85 300SD on the W126 chassis, the 12 following that describes 1-left hand drive 2-automatic trans. The remaining 6 numbers are the serial number.

You might be able to narrow down the year by a casting on the head. IIRC there is a year cast somewhere on the front of the head.

I think another way is to look at the IP model number as well.
