Windshield Replacement

The glass company installer just left my house saying he didn't know how to work around the moulding on my windshield rubber. He was afraid of damaging it and having to buy replacement moulding. Does anyone know the sequence for removing and replacing the moulding and rubber? He said he would come back after the next job, and a more experienced installer would join him to help out. Just in case, if there's anything that can be pointed out . . . would appreciate it. It has been over 20 years since I had to install a new rubber and put the moulding on it. All I remember is that bar soap and string are good to have around.

What year and model do you have?

It would be helpful if you detailed the year and model of your car as there are several differnt approaches for windshield replacement. The older models <123 usually have a rubber gasket and a sealing strip whihc needs to be pressed into a U in the gasket tightening the set-up and creating the seal around bot the glass and sheet metal. Later style cars 124+ for example, the windshield is glued into place and the outer seal is more of a trim component than an actual seal per se. The glued windshield should be replaced by knowledgable shops otherwise you'll end up with a mess of glass all over the place once it breaks on removal. These require special tools and pre-heating usually to help soften the glue while it is cut away with a fine piano wire or the such.

Regards

Windshield Replacement

It's a 1983 300D Turbo

And . . . they have returned with an experienced installer, who popped off the trim with no problem. They will be finished within 30 minutes. It did help that the car was sitting in the Florida sun all day, which resulted in soft rubber.

Thanks for the help.

I tried removing a glued in windshield with pain wire.. not fun.. Bought a cold knife and extra blades, doing it in the hot sun also helped.

two cold knifes would be best so you could keep one behind doing the cutting to keep some distance between the glass and body so there is less urethane to cut though.

The urethane used to glue in windows is really killer

On the 124, how does the top piece of trim come off? Is it glued in? The windshield was replace by the previous owner and Iam getting a lot wind noise. I have the rubber pad that needs to be replaced.

Someone who has gone through this or seen it done will have to explain, the FSM does not do a good job of detailing this. From what I have seem on my w124 it seems as if the trim is also glued to the windshield after the window is glued in place Maybe the Don can chime in since it seems he has seen this done before.

In the 123 and 126 replacing 20+ year old glass is a PITA. I called several glass places that charged me $250 or so for replacing the seal, and then they refused to be liable for their work. I figured I might as well have a crack at it (no pun intended), results and attempt still to come
