1987 300TD Flex Pipe
Mine has broken. What options do I have. Does anyone know the diameter of the exhaust inlet and outlet for the flex pipe?
The Mercedes part is WAY too expensive!

I was able to find a flex repair pipe at Napa - you may have to order it based on the diameter you need.
The part I purchased was about $35 - it looked exactly like the OEM Ford part it replaced - I cut out the old and welded in the new, sold the car to a friend about a year later - it's still nice and quiet.

the inlet and outlet where the same diameter.... I believe it was 2" but it's been a long time - I'm guessing Napa likely has them available in several different diameters.

I just welded in the flex pipe on my 84 300SD (126). I got a 2.5" flex piece and it was the same diameter as the pipe the flex tube butts up against. I'm not sure if your 124 is the same but I would guess that it is the same size.
Then I just cut the old flex pipe out, grind the edges clean and welded the new one in place. I attached the ends of the pipe on both sides (engine side and rear side) and just tacked the welds from flex pipe to tube. Then I took it off and welded the rest together. A whole new section would cost at least $125 (cheapest I found online). I did it for about 1/10th of that.

Just got back from NAPA. No luck. They only go to 2" on their flex pipes.

First thing you need to do is double check the size. Wait until the exhaust has cooled and measure the circumference....then do some math. Or measure the diameter of the split portion.

See if this is any good then let us know -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320176133449 The nice thing is it doesn't have a cat. The not nice thing is it might not be a bolt-on deal if it has a trap style 3-bolt flange for the muffler pipe. MB might have changed the flange position too. And JimmyL will take you to task on 300TDT Sixto 87 300D |
