85 300D Injection pump adjustment

What is the procedure for adjusting the injection pump. I have adjusted the Aneroid Compensator and significantly improved my low-end performance. The car still seems a little sluggish at higher speeds. I am going to install a Boost Controller but if the engine is not getting enough fuel than it will not benefit. I read in the Haynes manual that the home mechanic can do a "start of delivery" adjustment but should not attempt to go further than that as it requires special tools, etc. Thanks for any help.

The start of delivery adjustment as outlined in the Haynes manual is about all you need to do other than the aneroid adjustment that you have already done.

Good luck,

Does the,Start of Delivery Adjustment", have any effect on upper-end performance?

The start of delivery is the equivalent to engine timing in a gas engine. That said, you can optimize it a little for higher RPM range, but it would be at the expense of low end. The difference would be very minimal. There is an advance mechanism, just like a distributor, so most of this optimization is designed in. This optimization depends on the pump timing being set correctly to begin with. That's what the start of delivery adjustment will do.

I don't know exactly what you're looking to accomplish, but remember, this is a diesel engine that is designed to give as much power as possible with the primary design goals being fuel economy and engine longevity.

The world is full of compromises. When you drive a diesel you are compromising performance. If you wish to compromise fuel economy and engine longevity for performance, a gas engine would be a better choice.

Hope this helps,
