SLS sphere replacement
I'm about to tackle the replacement of the sls spheres on the wagon.
Just wondering how much fluid loss to expect. |

If you use caps to close off the lines while you work, you should only lose what comes out when you release the system pressure, what drips out until you cap the lines and whatever is inside the accumulators. I'd say 1/2 liter at most.

Good. I was afraid it might be a big spill.
Had my fair share of laying under it last week with the starter replacement(s). The (used) bosch rebuilt from the parts car was NG. I ended up repairing the original. Which is what I should have done in the first place. Starter R&R is easy now. Lots of practice. Oh yea... I guess I need to anounce the new CW. Man, do I feel guilty with this one. Even Jimmy hasn't seen this one yet. Where IS that CWC thread? |

COOL! I'll be looking for the pics and background story in the CWC thread.

Done!
Dang Chad, that was a big 1/2 liter.
Both accumulators were ruptured and full which emptied down my arm. Job took about an hour total. I'm about to go for a test drive. BTW, I noticed only one of the three 13mm mounting nuts had a washer. Same for both sides. I wonder if the spheres had been replaced in the past and the washers lost or if this is common. |

I noticed the same thing on mine. Odd.

How big of a 1/2 liter was it? I guess it must have been closer to 1 liter.

Good sphere/bad sphere pics
A good accumulator will have the diaphragm near the opening. Felt by inserting a rod.
The bad accumulator with a ruptured diaphragm offers no resistance. Rod goes all the way in. |

Any idea where I can get some spheres on the cheap?

You really can't find them cheap unless you get used ones.

What do you call cheap? I did mine last week. The spheres were less than 100 a side.

I got 2 good used ones at the PNP for $6/ea....
the fsm calls for attaching a tube to the bleeder valve on the leveling valve assy, then feed it into a catch can. if you do this w/ the car on ramps(IT WILL DROP DOWN A FEW INCHES- USE CAUTION!!) the fluid is pushed out of the struts. I only had a small amount of fluid loss.
