Saved a 1974 240D

here's the ad
http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/cto/1168210441.html

There some rust on the right side front fender, and light door damage on the driver side, Battery died so we could not start it, but he said " it drove fine for 2 days until the clutch went out. Oh its a 4 speed manual , and we purchased it for a whopping $250 (owner wanted to send it to the salvage yard for $150). i got a question, why is there a red oil cap (it says OEL) on the injector pump, what oil do i fill it with, motor oil?? how do you check the oil level... Anyways i ll get the pics when i get a tow it to my mech.!

yep, on the W115's the injection pump wasn't lubed via the motor.

Glad you saved it...

If it's empty I think it's 6 quarts? Start there, let it settle and then add more as necessary.

Take a Dixie cup and add not FILL some good diesel engine oil in there, maybe half a cup. That oil should be checked and changed monthly (I do on mine) to keep the inj pump running well. Usually people forget and negelct it since they believe the pump is lubed by the motor, which it is not.

That starts with the 616 series

There is a fill level plug on the side you need to remove before adding oil. These pumps have a tendency to leak fuel into the oil reservoir. Taking out the plug before adding oil will allow the fuel, which is lighter than oil, to escape out the fill level plug. Fill until only oil comes out.
