Really...

More herd mentality scare tactics.

BAAAAHHHHHH, BAAAAAHHHHHHH!

That was your mommy calling you back to the herd.

How dare you venture out to challenge a loner!

Average outside lane speed on the motorway in the UK is probably about 90mph. At night you regularly see people well in excess of 120mph.

I've done 135mph in my E300TD, at which point the limiter came on. Which was annoying, I can tell you.

Thank you for the voice of reason.

BTW, are you a ManU fan? If so, congrats on the Premier League Championship. Barcelona are doomed in Rome, too.

I am a fan, as much as you can be here, of Liverpool.

OT

When I was a kid my friend had a 67 Plymouth Barracuda with the 440 cid and dual Holley's. It was built for acceleration of course but we had it over 120mph on the highway. :D

If I hit 80 mph now I feel like I am a hardened criminal. Of course, we have pretty stiff penalty's for excessive speeding over here in the Colonies. :PExcessive is usually 15 mph over the speed limit.

That I believe is against board rules. Keep it civil.

Driving unreasonably fast on public roads is a bad idea. I have done it and it is a bad idea. Of course I have bragging rights but in reality I was not only endangering myself but those around me. And I was going a lot faster than 100mph.

There's no need to get angry, I was just throwing in a suggestion.

pawoSD 05-17-2009 11:45 PM

Based on the quality and level of maintenance of the average car on the road in the US....I'd not want the speed limit to be much higher. I think 80-85 in the open areas would be optimal.....but thats me.

In pretty much all areas going 40+ over, especially in heavy traffic, is a sure and solid pass to your local jail.....and they'd probably take your license away as well.

If you're referring to me again it wasn't heavy traffic.

It couldn't be with this car.

How could I get up to 115 in heavy traffic?

If I didn't have wide open interstate, with no need for braking it might be impossible.

And, yes, I am aware of the physics involved.

Go fast, bigger boom.

I get it.

I regret ever bringing it up.

I feel like I just got through mentioning to a room of elderly relatives that I once smoked pot.

Lets let this thread die peacefully. :o

Humm, didn't I warn you that making a thread about doing something really really dumb would bring out their wrath?

Oh yeah, I did.

I think we can all claim a ticket or two in our past from speeding but true excessive speed is for fools who dodge a bullit know and then, but when your driving the bullit its hard to justify the risk to others.Take it to the track, better clocking and surface anyway.

CSchmidt 05-18-2009 08:35 PM

does 50 count?

I just bought an 87 300d donor car for my rodbender replacement. It only has 1st & 2nd gear. We did a "engine soundness check" going about 50 in 2nd gear at 4500 rpm or so. It did real well! I would love to try one with 4 gears!

ashedd 05-18-2009 09:07 PM

WOW! I checked the thread yesterday because I really wanted to know how fast people have driven the W124 300D...

And today it's the same silliness. Still no real answers.

I will tell you that my 87 300D Turbo pulls very hard on the highway... pulls all the way to 100mph with more to go.

Disclaimer..

Do not drive over the speed limit. Someone may yell at you.

turbobenz 05-18-2009 09:36 PM

this happens whenever anyone brings up speeding. I agree with both parties. Excessive speeding is irresponsible If there is other traffic. I had my 85 300D up to 115 before on a public road but I did it at three in the morning on a wide open freeway without passing a single motorist. IMO this is perfectly acceptable. If im driving 115mph on an open road the only person Im putting at risk is myself. If the OP was in light traffic (hopefully very light) and didnt pass anyone at high speed then whats the problem? He knows the consequences and hopefully wasnt putting anyone at risk. Anyone who doesnt venture into triple digits atleast once a year needs to lighten up and live a little.

That's a shame. I'm a great believer in setting an appropriate speed for the conditions, and not at what a number on a stick says.

BTW the national speed limit in the UK is 70mph. Traffic police won't even bat an eyelid if you're under 85mph.

I don't support any team, although oddly enough I work on the premiership matches (tv cameraman). I live about 5 miles from Old Trafford.
