HELP!! Coolant LEak

Hey Guys,

Need help identifying how to fix this coolant leak.
Just started today! I have an '83 300SD.

I took some photos and a quick video showing the leak.

ANY HELP is appreciated!!

Probably the short 2" hose from the tstat housing that the dealership will want $30 for. You can get it from napa for like $5.

I believe there is a short section of hose that connects the water pump housing there, it will have hose clamps on each end but since that engine is SO GUNKED UP its really hard to see anything in the pictures. The squirt in the movies tells me you do not want to drive that car anywhere until its fixed but you probably already know that!
If its that hose, the dealer is a good source but be aware they sell in meter lengths, not the 4 inch or so piece you may need
Use some WD40 to spray around in there and some elbow grease with an old toothbrush then rinse off with a thin stream of water from a pressure hose and it will look more like working on and you'll be proud of how clean you can get it before doing the job so less dirt gets on your hands (you do wear gloves to work on it don't you?)

What is this hose called?? I called NAPA, but they said they only had a 22" upper hose and that doesn't seem right. Should i remove it first and then take it with me???

You could take it off and take it there, for them to match. My indy import parts place had it, Fastlane has it (have to get a special order quote), and some McParts places might have it, or something close. I hate getting things that "almost" fit, so I got the real deal from my supplier.

That hose caused me quite a few problems...make sure it's cut nice and straight on each end, and that the t-stat housing is seated deep enough inside it. Also, I had to play with the straps to get them nice and horizontal...mine leaked for what seemed like forever before I got it sealed up.

EDIT: I think it's called the coolant bypass hose.

It's the bypass hose. 42mm ID according to NAPA, but the dealer's was 40mm.

You are going to have to remove the thermostat housing from the block.
so order the gasket for that. two bolts hold it onto the block.
Any hydraulic hose shop should have the hose, take the fitting with you for the size.

Mine leaks also, I have had it off a couple times. then it stops leaking, now we are back to weeping some. My Indy said to put a coating of Permatex gasket sealer on the inside of the hose. that brown goopy stuff, part 2-A. when I get reeeeel motivated again, I dive into this one more time.

Good catch...forgot about that gasket, both in my post AND when I actually changed my bypass hose. I made my own gasket (parts place closed) and it worked out fine...it's paper though, not foam, so if you're going to make your own, make sure it's the right thickness. In fact, just buy one...then you know it's right.

Remember when taking off the old gasket between the t-stat housing and block to make sure it's SQUEAKY clean before installing the new gasket...guys here recommended (and I used) one of those soft, blue kitchen scrubbers to clean the surface. It takes some elbow grease, but will be worth it - rather than putting it all back together, only to have it leak again (ask me how I know).

I ended up using some Permatex too, just to make sure it wouldn't leak (I was REALLY tired of putting it on, taking off, putting on, taking off).
