W123 fanbelt replacement

82 300D turbo

So, I am trying to loosen the twin belts that run over the water pump and the alternator, by moving the nut sitting on the front end of the alternator, but nothing seems to happen.

I loosened the bolt on the bottom that keeps the alternator in place.

The nut on the front end of the alternator starts developing a tilt when I move it out to far, I don't think I can completely take it off.

Moving it in doesn't do much either, it thightens up the clip.

Well, maybe I am turning the wrong nut.

What's the trick to loosen the alternator? Do I need a crowbar to level and push the unit at some point and to get the belts loose?

Any ideas?

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...0&d=1220363020There are three bolts to loosen. Then the adjusting nut must be loosened to desired point.

Man you are awesome!

I guess it is the one top right and the one on/in the rail, besides the bottom.

Ps, I think you just broke a record. Competent answer in less then 60 seconds.

looks like 4 minutes to me...

But I'll take your word for it.

Ok, got the belts replaced. Piece of cake, once you know which bolts to turn.

jt20!
Your picture was of great help, thanks for that.
I have to tell you, it's only 2 bolts to loosen, after that you can adjust the tension nut.
Both of the bolt/nut need to be wrenched on from the back, one from the top the other from the bottom.

Just minor details.

which bolt doesn't need to be loosened before it moves freely?

..the lower one?

Looks like a pivot point to me, there are only three bolts, one of which is the adjusting bolt.
So when LaRondo mentions two AND the tension nut (L bolt), well, I'm not a math major, but that equals three to me. I may have missed something tho, wouldn't be the first time!

actually, you SHOULD loosen all three through bolts, the one on the pivot point of the bracket allows it to pivot easier so you don't bend the adjuster bracket. it's very finicky...
so to sum up, you should loosen the bolt closest to the block on the pivot of the bracket, the bolt that is attached to the long adjuster bolt, and the bolt at the bottom of the alternator. THEN loosen/tighten the actual adjuster bolt. then tighten all the rest...
that equals a total of 4 bolts that need to be loosened and tightened.
