Pulley Allignment

I have just replaced the water pump on my 1979 300sd. I have already replaced the pump and am trying to put the pulley back on , however, it keeps getting into the pulley below it. I have tried and tried to get things to line up but have been unsuccessful as they keep hitting each other. Thinking I bought the wrong water pump, I tried putting it back together with the old pump, but still the same thing. A little help from someone with exerience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

From all you have tried, we can only guess that either the pump is not mounted correctly in its housing, or the pully is not mounted correctly on the pump. I would check both.
