Keeps running even after pressing the stop lever

I have an '82 300SD that will not stop even after pushing the stop lever under the hood. I'm sorry if this has been posted before. I read the postings on here about the vacuum shut-off valve. My other 300SD has this problem, but pushing the stop lever stops it, so I don't think my '82 has a vacuum problem. Could the shut-off valve become so shot that after manually closing it, it still leaks? Could there be another part of the fuel system that could be the problem?
Thanks,
Joshua

The length of the linkage probably has something to do with it... when it happened to me I popped the linkage off the stop lever and apparently it was able to go down more and shut it down.

I tried this, but the linkage did not move any further.

Pushing the stop lever did cause the car to have a slower idle, but not slow enough to stop it. After the car had been idling for a few hours, I was able to stop the car by pushing the stop lever.

If I take the shut-off valve out of the car, is there a way to check if it is working?

You can kill it by taking air away. Pop open the air cleaner, cover the inlet completely w/ your palm & press down.

I was worried about covering the air intake with my hand, I thought there might be enough suction to hurt me.
