The John Deere 4020 my grandfather had me mow fire ants in south Alabama with. I think he trusted me to drive it at 13 because he was tired of getting stung.

72 220d. Powder blue, black interior, manual steering crank windows no sunroof. Sweet driving car. Slow.
[SIGPIC] Diesel loving autocrossing grandpa Architect. 08 Dodge 3/4 ton with Cummins & six speed; I have had about 35 benzes. I have a 39 Studebaker Coupe Express pickup in which I have had installed a 617 turbo and a five speed manual. It still needs upholstery redone...I also have a 427 Cobra replica with an aluminum chassis.

The ivory '82 AT 240D, with manual sunroof and power windows I bought two years ago, on my 50th birthday.
(Or as some smart-alec commented "For yor 50th, instead of a walker or wheelchair, you got a 240D!")
$225, including the rusty floors and a broken trailing arm, but it had nice paint and 4 new Michelins, so I basically paid for the tires and got the car for free!
Fixed the suspension and numerous other flaws, patched the floors, and added some decent seats. Slow but not that bad - the perfect lazy-man's car.

Happy Motoring, Mark

My first diesel was a 1979 VW Dasher Wagen, 4 speed, sunroof and AC. If you think a 240D is under powered think again! Going up the I-5 from Los Angeles on the Grapevine, you had to drive in 2nd with the AC off and could barely make 30 mph floored!!! Driving in the right lane really ticked off the truckers as they had to pass me. But, it was 1979 and there were gas lines, so diesel were a HOT item to have, waiting lists of 3 months or more for a VW diesel! I owned the car for 4 months, put 7,500 miles on and sold it for $2,000 over what I paid for it (which was $9,450), never made money on a new car like since.

But, my all time favorite is my current '83 300D, big, solid, and moves when you press the accelerator.

What got me started was my uncle's powder blue 69 220D. Very nice car. He used to run back and forth between Chicago and Albuqurque with it. Diesel fuel cost in those days was in the 35 cent range. I picked up a tobacco brown 68 200D, and I was hooked.

Pay for fuel -never!

VW Diesel Dasher 4 speed. My buddy had a VW Diesel rabbit and turned me on. His Dad worked at the local airport and brought home drained aircraft fuel from private jets to run our VW Diesels.

I drove VWs after that until a few years back when all the good VW indys closed shop around here and then I switched to MB diesels.

I still have a adversion to paying for fuel-which is probably why all the family MBs run on two tank WVO systems.

1980 Ford LNT 8000 cement truck on Guam with a 3208 Cat and a 13-spd. Actually my battalion had three of them. Two were still in running shape when I got there. A certain CM2 Jon Parks had been driving the third one when the rear main seal went out and dumped all the oil. He wasn't watching the gauges so it had shredded the main bearings by the time he noticed the problem.

That was in 2001. I didn't own my own diesel until I got my 300D in 2005.
Anyone who thinks a 300D is fast drives too slow.

83 300D Turbo with manual conversion, early W126 vented front rotors and H4 headlights 351,xxx miles
08 Triumph Street Triple 21,xxx miles, lowered 10mm in front, Pirelli Angel GT tires, otherwise stock.

my older sister was best friends with the daughter of the only doctor in my hometown. and one of his cars was a dark blue 300D. i remember thinking that it was very special, as it didn't look like any other car i had ever seen and it was owned by the doctor. i only rode in it a couple times, and forgot about it for years, until really seeing the the 300Ds again and noticing them in ithaca, all burning wvo. i got one for myself, tried it out and loved it. sold it and got a better one, and this one is definitely true love.
