240D Power Issue

Sometimes when I start my 83 240D it acts like it idles a little lower than usual and when I put it to the floor there just isn't any power. If I shut it off and restart it, it acts perfectly fine.

Its not the fuel filters cause I just purged it and changed them both. I also took the tank out and cleaned it yesterday as well as blew out the lines. It was doing this way before I even did all of that so I doubt its from any of the work yesterday.

Don't think there's any vacuum leak or anything like that. All door locks work and the car shuts off appropriately.

Any ideas?

Filter don't look the greatest. Putting a new one in as soon as it gets here. Think that could be it though?

Are your linkages adjusted?
The fuel valve on the IP on my car was only 40% open at WOT!
I had worn pivot rod bushings that were the culprit and once remedied
the car was like brand new.

I'll check give them a check.

If the throttle pivot bushing was the problem it should still start normal right? I can always tell when its not going to have any power cause as soon as it fires it runs much harder. I don't even touch the accelerator and it already is running harder.

Yes, starting is unaffected by a worn bushing

Try removing the vacuum line to the shut off valve when it is running like that. I have had a similar issue where there still was some vacuum to the valve there by restricting the fuel flow.

Can't hurt to change it and closely inspect the linkage, especially the bushing on the firewall.

Paul... has a good idea, an easy check too.

Sounds great.

I checked the rubber and pivot bushing. Rubber is decent and there's no "slippage".

Pauls idea is good and I'll pull the line next time it acts up.

Well I adjusted the a couple throttle linkages. One of the times I started it, it acted up! So I took Paul's idea, pulled the vacuum to the shutoff valve and almost immediately it came to a normal idle and ran perfectly.

Time for a new shutoff valve? Where do I go from here?

I'm thinking it's getting the wrong signal- should only get vacuum when you turn off the ignition.

Me too, usually when they fail, they won't shut the engine off. There is a valve on the ignition switch, there may be an issue there.

I have an ignition so I'll see what I come up with.

I figured too that usually the problem is shutting the engine off. So something is different here.

Changed the valve on the ignition with one I had lying around. Still does it but seems not as much.

Coincidence that valve is bad too? I'm stumped here!
