Question fixing my odometer

i want to fix my odometer this weekend so i can figure out what kinda gas mileage i am getting. it was working when i first bought the car, the trip odometer was working too and i pushed the reset button while on the move at like 25 mph and it reset and after that they both stopped working. since then (few months ago) the speedo registered maybe 115 more miles, and the trip odometer went up to 52 miles. every once and a while it will work for a few blocks its weird.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be? i want to take the cluster out tonight or tomaro depending on what kinda freetime i have tonight. I checked out diesel giants page on the odometer repair and what he was fixing looks like it might be very frustrating. so if anyone has had similer problem i would appreciate some help. thanks - Jason

I am pretty sure the SDL has an electronic Speedo. If you are working on one of those i am not sure that dieselgiant's instructions work.

but I would not bet me life on it since i am not sure....

I used the DieselGiant how-to to fix mine, it's not that bad. Only thing was I couldn't figure out how to get the locktite in the right spot, so I did without it. Just roughing up the shaft at the end where the main gear sits has worked for about 500 miles so far. If/when it starts flaking out again I'll take another shot with the locktite. The only other issue I had was getting the retaining collar off the shaft. Mine obviously never read the "it is not on with great force to begin with" part.

if you are good working on small objects, then the dieselgiant instructions should work for your odometer.

The 300SDL though has some electronics built into it.....with a circuit board soldered onto it......I sent Coda's odometer to Rick at www.speedometer.com

For the W126 with the electronic speedometer, try these folks: http://www.odometergears.com/

Their website has quite a bit of information on what to look for and what parts are needed.

just got off the phone with jeff from odometergears.com. great guy, gave me good advice on how to fix my problem. identified that i didn't need to buy anythign from him and provided clear instructions on what to clean/lube.

he'll definitely get my business if something does require replacing.
