Question hard steering

My 1990 350 SDL seems to steer very hard (force required to turn steering wheel). When I turn the wheel all the way left or right I don't hear the pressure bypass kick in. Is this normal on 90 MB's? The arm power required is about twice that of my mom's Linclon. The pump seems to be fine and the fluid good. Is there a bypass valve that could be hanging open in the pump or gear box?

You might have to find and let someone else who owns a 1990 350 SDL drive your Car to see if the steering force is normal.
Or take it to several mechanics for test drives and see if they all have the same opinions (don't tell them what the other mechanics said).

Unfortunately not your year and Model. But, my 84 300D takes more force to turn than my 82 Volvo Diesel does.
Part of the reason my be that the Volvo has Rack and Pinion Steering and the Mercedes does not (and smaller diameter tires). Also the Mercedes has more Caster (makes it more stable going straight but harder to turn) in the front end alinement than the Volvo does. All of which make the Volvo easier to turn.
