Question Hazing

Ive been working on this 220 car with a 617 swap off and on for a while now. Ive got most of the bugs worked out but the engine still hazes at an idle. It smells like unburned diesel fuel. It doesn't smoke when the engine is reving up but any time its held at an rpm it hazes, with puffs of smoke at an idle.

Ive got the cam to crank timing right on, which helped allot with the engines ruff idle and starting the car, but it still hazes pretty bad cold, and certainly noticeable when warmed up but, better.

I put clear return lines, and fuel lines on it and noticed little air bubbles that seam to be coming out of the injectors. there is no air in the fuel going into the pump or out of the return from the pump. Does this mean anything.

You all expect bad injectors to be the cause of the hazing or the fuel pump?

By haze are you speaking about thin gray smoke?

If you are getting a rhythmic puff from the exhaust something is not burning right in one or more of the pre-combustion chambers.

Try loosening the Hard Line Nut at each Injector (cutting the Fuel off to that Injector) 1 at a time (and tighting it back up before moving to the next Injector) and see which one/s have an effect on the exhaust puffing.

If you find one or more that has an effect on the puffing the cause could be, Valves Need adjusting, Injector problem, head gasket problem (relates to low compression), or damage to the Ball Pin in the prechamber.

Swapping the suspected Injector with one another you know is good from another cylinder and doing the test again will tell you if it is an Injector problem as the problem will follow the suspected Injector no matter what Cylinde you put it in.

On the other hand when I bought my Volvo Diesel I was getting hazy gray smoke (no puffing though) until the Engine was at lest partly warmed up. In my case it was due to low compression (as checked with a Compression Tester).

If the Engine sat somewhere for a long period without running I suppose it is possible for some rings to be sticking.
