Replacing Glow Plugs on 94 S350
A couple of months ago, and after MUCH research and browsing of this and other forums, I took the leap on a 94 S350. Bought the car on eBay in Utah and drove it back to Atlanta with no problems whatsoever. The car is a dream on the road and does NOT use any oil. Just turned over 240,000 miles last week.
Anyway, I'm getting ready to replace the glow plugs but I haven't been able to find much information on here about doing it for this specific engine. I've read that taking off the intake is optional, but wanted to hear from people have done it both ways. I've also been trying to find the best reamer, but they seem to be hard to come by for this model as well. I did find one from Baum Tools that I'll probably end up ordering. I already have the glow plugs, but if the intake has to come off, I need the gasket before I dive in. What should I know before tackling this? Best tools to use? Thanks for any help you can provide. Seriously, this forum has been incredibly helpful at finding out stuff in the past. I usually find most everything through the search function, but this one seems to be eluding me. |

My method of choice is leaving the manifold in place and removing instead the cruise actuator.
I don't think removing the manifold is optional if you're going to ream the prechambers. Get a long 6mm hex bit with a ball end for the back 3 intake manifold runners. Have a new gasket ready but I'd reuse the old one if it's intact since manifold vacuum is not an issue. There's also a gasket between the crossover pipe and intake manifold. Another one I reuse. Keep a rag under this smaller gasket as you remove the crossover pipe because the gasket can slip between the block and IP. Decide if you're going to do anything about the soot lining the crossover pipe and manifold. It takes chemicals and scouring to get it clean. You probably won't notice any performance enhancement for the effort. Good time to check that all the injector line clips are in place. Sixto 87 300D |

Welcome to the forum. Your engine is similar to my '87. Taking off the intake manifold makes changing glow plugs easier, especially the first time. The intake manifold gasket is metal and may not need to be replaced. If the EGR system is still active, the intake manifold will be all crudded up with a nasty mixture of oil and soot. It should be cleaned before returning it to the engine. Ordinary hand tools are all you need. Keep track of all the vacuum lines so you get them back where they belong.
