engine swap options???

I recently posted a question concerning oil consumption,93 300sd,the general consenus of those who responded was,it's a rod bender, thanks for the replies. Now my question is what are my options for a feasible engine swap, would like dependability and be able to keep as power as possible. Also where have the people on this forum gotten their used engines and have they had good luck with the people they have dealt with? 1 reply received led me to believe that this is a design flaw, they did not use heavy duty enough connecting rods and that makes me think replacement would be more cost effective than rebuilding.

Ranked in order of desireability to me:

1) OM606 turbo (98-99 E300) with your current IP = mechanicals are bolt-in, have to fabricate intercooler attachments in the bumper or fabricate plumbing to go without an intercooler. An OM606 is ~$4000, you supply the rest.

2) 603.97 short block from MB or www.mercedesengines.net = direct bolt-in replacement for your block. $6000 from Metric, more from MB but I think MB has a better warranty.

3) 603.96 short block = direct bolt-in replacement for your block. There are small bits you'll have to transfer but I don't think it's more work than if you buy a fresh .97 short block. You'll notice the lack of torque before the turbo spools but I didn't find it objectionable. Between luck and patience you should find a short block under $1000. My swap cost me $2500 but I'm hard pressed to remember all that went into it besides a new chain and gaskets. I might have counted hoist rental in that total. Definitely didn't touch the block. Hone looked good, bearings Plastigaged within installation spec, etc. Key to this was being of like mind with Hitman X - his evaluation of the block was spot on with my evaluation.
