I just had a Standyne injection pump (IP) rebuilt for my Chevy Diesel at a cost of $340. I was quoted $375 but actual cost was lower because pump didn't need as many parts as usual.
I will give the name of an excellent IP shop in upper NY state to anyone who e-mails me. They have an 800 number and you can call and ask for a quote. ~~~~~~~PEH~~~~~~~~ |

Well, it looks like I'm going to dodge the bullet on this one. I didn't have easy access to any redline, but I got some stuff at the local diesel truck shop. I didn't expect it to do much. I put it in the tank and filled it Saturday. I drove it about forty miles Saturday and Sunday, then drove it to the office yesterday.
I started it yesterday morning and found my way out of the cloud of smoke with a slightly rough running engine. I drove 89 miles to the office and it was running really good when I shut it off. When I started it yesterday afternoon it didn't smoke that I noticed. I drove back home and raised the hood to check for leaks, I had fixed one of the bypass hoses. There was a leak a small leak at the number one injection pipe to pump fitting on number one. I took it off, cleaned it well, put it back on and tightened everything up well, then started the warm engine to work out the air. When I started it up this morning it ran pretty smooth right away, and didn't smoke AT ALL that I could notice. I think that couple of hundred miles with the additive cleaned the injectors nicely. I think it was like someone pointed out. The injectors got crudded up bad by running in the oil pumping engine before overhaul. BTW, the oil drip tube does not spot the driveway any longer, the air filter housing is staying spotless, and the oil is not going down on the stick at all. The engine is really doing well now. Time to move onto finishing the AC and fixing the climate control. That'll be the next post in which I will be pestering everyone for advice. Thanks a bunch to everyone for their help and comments. Have a great day, |

Larry-- I hope I will have the same results. I did order rebuilt injectors. the cylinders were in spec ( just barely ) and I am going to try to just rering. Main bearings were on the tight side of the spec. Rod bearings were in spec but I will replace, one looked a little worn. Head will have all guides replaced, but valves looked great. I didn't change my timing chain, as it looked fine.
good luck with your car!!!! |

jb,
This is against conventional wisdom but has been scientifically proven by Ryder labs. IF the replacement rings are cast iron, do not break the glaze on the cylinder walls. If you break the glaze you will be causing extra wear. I have done this with great success several times. Cast iron rings are recognized by their grey appearance. Do not do this with anything other than cast iron rings. Good luck, |

Larry,
I replaced rod and main bearings, oil pump, oil pump chain, crank gear and motor mounts. The block is back in the compartment with the starter, A/C and power steering pumps attached. It is awaiting the head assembly. The head received new valves and seals. The guides were fine. I had the threads come out of two of the rocker bolt holes in the head. Therefore I put helicoils in 13 of the 24 bolt holes. Hope that holds. The intake has been attached to the head and I'm waiting for the filter housing gasket to come in before I put the head on. I have a new oil pressure sender for that too. When the head goes on, I have a new cam gear, chain (of course), rails and guides. I have a rental chain press coming from Performance Parts to make sure the chain is connected correctly. I'll total up the cost later. But so far, parts and machining are at about $1200.

Michael,
Sounds like it's coming along well. $1,200 doesn't sound too bad, it could definitely be worse. Best of luck with it, |
