Simple Green has been around for a lot longer than "being green" has been in vogue. I suspect that any connection is purely coincidental.

I have been cleaning engine compartments with Simple Green for many years. It works really well on the diesel sludge but eats up dust and under-hood neglect on gas cars just as well. I went through an entire bottle on my 300D trying to clean it up.

I think you are right, tangofox, and didn't mean to imply that they jumped on the bandwagon. It is more the consumer's perception that I was commenting on.

I'm pretty sure the "green" part of the name is little more than reference to its color. Much the same way as Fast Orange.

For anyone who cares, the original Simple Green formula is pretty tough on aluminum and similar metals. SG recently introduced an aircraft-safe product to address that issue.

Awesome cleaner is an awesome cleaner, and it's only a dollar for a big concentrated bottle Oddly enough the awesome website's MSD sheet section has been "under construction" for a long time.

I use GOOP for my hands and SG for cleaning engines, lawnmowers, inside of garbage cans, etc.

Bikers use SimpleG for their chains... some leave the chains in the full strength solution for days at a time only to remove their chains with pitted links and bearings - it eats the metal!

I thought the name SImple Green was a reference to the Army, wasn't it originally formulated for use by the military? They could dye it any color they want.

I like the SG, but it will oxidize aluminum at full strength if you're not careful. There is some purple stuff out there that seems to do about the same thing (must be diluted)

If you do get some oxidation, spraying a bit of WD40 seems to help bring the finish back.

Simple Green was originally used to clean coffee roasting equipment.

D-limonene.

some people have a terrible reaction to it. Like my previous boss.. if he smells it.. he breaks out in hives. This is due to a previous over-exposure.

DATA sheet for fastorange

From the Simple Green MSDS

Section 3: COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
The only ingredient of Simple Green® with established exposure limits is undiluted 2-butoxyethanol (<4%) (Butyl Cellosolve; CAS No. 111-76-2) [1% for Scrubbing Pad]: the ACGIH TLV-TWA is 20 ppm (97 mg/m3). Based upon
chemical analysis, Simple Green® contains no known EPA priority pollutants, heavy metals or chemicals listed under RCRA, CERCLA, or CWA. Analysis by TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) according to RCRA revealed
no toxic organic or inorganic constituents.

A Google search of 2-Butoxyethanol. http://www.intox.org/databank/documents/chemical/butoxyet/cie32.htm

An excerpt:

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW:
Colourless liquid with a weak, pleasant, sweet, ester odour. COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID AND VAPOUR. VERY TOXIC. Fatal if inhaled. Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Central nervous system depressant. High vapour concentrations may cause headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, incoordination and confusion. EYE AND SKIN IRRITANT. Causes severe eye and skin irritation.

Makes me want to run some through the coffee maker right now.
