start looking at the Pick n Pulls and other junk yards in your area. Iam sure in L.A. there are a bunch. check e-bay, Craigs List, etc...
Metric Motors is located in Canoga Park which is close to where you live. give Mike a call, and he might be able to locate you a good used engine. I don`t think you want to buy one of his rebuilds because of price, and what your 80 is worth. right now with a blown engine it is worth junk yard price.. what ever PNP gives for a junker. If it is as good as you state, it might be worth putting in some time and money. You would only be doing this for the love of the old MB, not for the resale you could get out of it. remember, there is nothing more expensive than an old MB. Charlie

With a little luck you can pick up a good used engine - maybe even a turbo - for 300-500 bucks. If you're handy with a wrench and can get your hands on an engine hoist (a.k.a. cherry picker) you can do an engine swap by yourself in 3-4 days. If the body and interior are as good as you describe, it would be worth it.

I am not that handy. I'd have to hire someone. However if I could find one for 300-500 I'd try it. It'd be a little sad to bury it. On the other hand if I have to pay 1500 + labor, I might as well buy a new car and part this one out or something.

One good thing about the 60x engines is that they have a low oil level sensor and associated light on the dash. It has probably prevented many disasters like this over the years
Wonder if there's a way to retrofit one on a 61x?

I got a quote in a shop for $800 labor and $1200 for engine. If I could keep the total cost to around a 1000 it might be worth it, but where to find the engine.

You are in Los Angeles, so I think in Semi valley is a MB wrecking yard, check them out. they might have a used engine for you.
I mentioned above, to give mike at metric Motors a call, he might have a line on one. I know they rebuild MB engines, but he might know of a good used one. 818-712-9881 I got a price quote from Silver Star recycling in sacramento a couple yrs ago, and they quoted me $800.00. It isn`t all that difficult to pull the engine and transmission as a unit. I did it in the front yard. you will need an engine hoist (cherry picker) couple floor jacks, ramps or stands. and some basic metric hand tools. maybe a couple pans to drain oil, oh waite, you already did that. there is a lot of help here on the forum to walk you through it, and I know there are a bunch of members in your area, right guys . Ouch! Gotta keep an eye on that oil pressure gauge if you hear any scrapes while driving. To get into your $1000 price range you are probably going to have to do the labor your self. Engines from non-U-pull it yards are usually $750 or so. If you find one at a U-pull it they can be a few hundred less.
