300SDL Straight Pipe

(edited, added 2 more videos)

Hi all,

I've had my SDL sitting for a few months due to some major transmission slippage. Finally took it to the shop and they fixed a seal and a cracked flex disc.. It still slips a little after it has been started. Anyway, I've been wanting to get a straight pipe exhaust mostly for the neat factor.. The car isn't pretty so I don't feel bad for taking away from the stock look/sound.

Here are some youtube videos I took last night. Sorry they're dark, I took them mostly to get the sound.. I had the windows down, so after I let off the throttle, the wind noise is noticable.

10 Minute Driving around/accelerating in-car-camera view
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew99rOhyk_I

3 Minute Crank and static position camera while I drove down the street
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plnaalD06xc

1 Minute Daytime Acceleration
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giA4my88zFU

1 Minute Daytime Stationary Revving
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYkA3cfXp5Q

It cost $170 from Muffin Mufflers in Austin TX. Took them about an hour. They just cut at the resonator and left the stock flexpipe off the turbo. Going all the way to the turbo would have been just shy of $500.

I'll try to get some daytime videos soon.

Nice. Mine is very similar on my 300SD/617. The 603 with a straight pipe sounds very smooth......dare I say, very similar to the GM Fireball V6!

The 617 has more of a semi-truck sound to it.

Not bad!

Here's what it sounds like with a true 2.5" straight-pipe exhaust (no cat, no nothing )

What do you mean by "true"? The SDL doesn't have a cat as far as I know...

If they had the trap ox recall done they get an oxidization cat.

Do you have a video so we can get an idea of what it sounds like?

I'm confused...

Is this what the catalyst looks like?

I'm pretty sure I have that replacement pipe, and I didn't have a catalyst down underneath.

Sorry, I thought you had an 87 for some reason. The 86s didn't get the trap oxidizer with the federal emissions package The diesel cat looks like the gasser one you pictured, except that the ones I've seen are totally round not pancake shaped.

Mine had a pancake under it, and we replaced it with an identical one out of a parts list when we put the new exhaust under it (stock replacement) a few years ago. Guess some models varied.

Oh yeah, forgot you had an '86. My '87 did have a catalyst on it, which I promptly removed (it was starting to get plugged anyway).

I'm wondering why yours is so much quieter than mine.

I'd remove it ASAP then, it can damage the turbo, and hurts power/fuel economy.

The guy at the muffler shop said that the longer the stainless tip is, the deeper it sounds. As you can see the tip is about 1.5 feet long. They didn't seem to be big diesel experts tho.

Or maybe your speakers are too low? Or I should take some video with other background noises so you can make a comparison..
