84 300SD shift

1) I am not a tranny guy and would like a little help. My 84 will shift into drive or reverse smoothly when cold. However, when the fluid is hot it will take a few seconds and then go in with a bang or lurch. Any idea how I can alleviate this?

2) Also is there a way to delay the 2-3 shift? All othert shifts occur appropriate but the 2-3 comes a little early.

3) When the fluid is warm the 3-4 shift is a little soft under acceleration. When easing up on the throttle the 3-4 shift will almost bang into 4th.

Thanks for the help.

The tranny normally takes a couple seconds to shift into gear, my SD is the same way. As far as the shift points, search the forum for "Bowden cable adjustment" and you should find some great results. For the firmness of the shifts, you'll want to adjust the vacuum to the shift modulator. If you search the forum for "shift modulator" or "vacuum shift adjust" of the sorts, there are a ton of DIYs for adjusting the shift modulator.

Edit: Also, how many miles on the tranny? Before you do anything, warm up the tranny by driving around and make sure the fluid level is perfect. When was the last fluid and filter change?

Thanks for that. The tranny fluid and filter have been recently changed. The Bowden cable has been adjusted so that my 1-2 shift happens when it should. It is the 2-3 that happens early. 3-4 occurs when it should.

Theres alot of info about the K1 spring and B2 kit.Find out if your trans was updated. Also if old radiator, use external universal transcooler instead. The transcooler in radiators are known for rotting out,and sending antifreeze into your trans.

Thanks for that. How can I tell if it has been updated?

As well, I have never heard of the contamination problem. I guess I better look into it.

Do you have any particular links to the K1/B2 springs? I don't even know what they control...

If there is one problem that I never recall being reported here, it's that one.

Yes someone here posted pink transmission fluid.I have had that problem in the past.Every automatic I buy,I delete radiator cooling for fresh air(trans cooler) or use the AC reefer if not wanting AC.AC hurts my bones.
I learned this trick way back in the 70s out of a Hot Rod magazine. If you use a reefer you can hold more fluid.Heat kills automatics, colder the longer it,and fluid last.

On the K1:

Run, don't walk, to the dealer, get a K1 kit!!!

Hope these help you out! And my $0.02, I've never heard of antifreeze in the trans being a common problem. I guess it's possible, but much more useful to rule out these other issues first.
