Heat works wonders somtimes, but dont wanna get it too hot and soften the bolt. A micro butane should do. I would also put a punch down in the bolt head and give it a good rap with the hammer. I would also give an impact a shot, the fast whack of the internal hammers will put more twist force to the bolt than a slow pull by hand, but use descretion I have gotten by doing that a few times, even on non impact rated tools. I'd wear some safty gear and prehaps wrap a towel aound the area to stop flying bits should there be any. And should you have anything want to strip, a small dab of valve lapping compound will add some bite. Hope that helps!

Skippy~ As for perception: Drive what you like and can afford. Those who don't like it can supply vacuum to one of your components. LOL

M10 XZN Tool!

I just last week picked up a spare from the local MB dealership once I'd found out the Hazet 2751 M10 XZN MB# 601 589 00 10 00 was only $18 and that's without any discount!

I've used the equivalent Stahlwille 3054X M10 XZN on many, many dozens of bolts, 60X cylinder head bolts, and the 201/124 axle to differential bolts, and a couple of the 201/124 rear suspension link bolt heads use the M10 XZN. Some Bosch alternators use the M10 XZN in their shaft, so you need it if you ever have to swap a pulley. The work surface where this tool contacts the fastener is still in excellent condition with virtually no wear.

This is one of the applications where you will never regret paying a little extra for the infinitely higher quality that good tools deliver. When it comes to reinstalling cylinder head bolts with the torque they require and then the rotational pulls after that you really don't want to something to give unexpectedly! Snap-On makes a shorter 3/8" M10 XZN for $27.74 and Matco makes both 3/8" & 1/2" both long and short versions costing even more.

I have always been able to get them out with my half inch drive craftsman breaker with a sixteen inch extension of light guage conduit. The conduit is either three quarter or one inch and its a hammer on fit. Ive been using the conduit for at least fiftteen years.

Mb head bolts are very very tough and its always a wonder to me that nothing breaks or my body is damaged. When they release its almost scary.

Agreed! That creaking snapping sound is not pleasant!

Thanks all -- I'm going to see what I can scare up tool-wise today. I wish I had a dealership close to me; I would just buy the MB tool.

I'd be willing to pick it up and meet you half way, if you order it. It would have to wait until Saturday though..

Thanks, Dan. I appreciate the offer! I'll make some calls today; the Champaign dealer is pricey on EVERYthing; their parts guy is smoking crack, I think. We may be in Springfield for a wedding Saturday, so I will check to see if they can have one there for me to pick up, possibly. When I have priced parts locally they have always been a good 20-30% cheaper than Champaign. Weird.

Guys -- dead-on with the Hazet recommendation. I drove to Indianapolis for the proper tool, and it took every bolt out but the one with the broken bit 'o tool still in it. Now I need to figure that one out. My extractor bits can be ground down to fit in the can bridge recesses, but then there's no way to turn them -- the head that needs to be ground down is the only means of turning them. Guess I'll look for a different style.

Maybe you can loosen the broken part in the bolt head by hitting it with a chisel trying to turn it opposite rotation from how it failed. Once it is loose, then a magnet may pull it out. My recollection is that those XZN heads don't really jam the tool the way a plain hex socket can.

The IRWIN internal-helix is designed to be put on the end of a ratchet-extension, that's how I removed the one in my cam tower. Ground the external hex off first (un-necessary when running it with a socket-set extension anyway).

Thanks for the recommendations, all. I will try to round up one of the Irwin extractor sets this weekend and/or try breaking up that piece of the broken tool. We're out of town at the in-laws anyway, so the car sits at home in the garage all by it's lonesome. 8^(

Thanks for the kind offer, Jeff. We just got back from our weekend, but we were in the wrong neck 'o the woods anyway. I'll pick up a set at Sears this week, hopefully, but the gesture is sure appreciated!

Grrrr... got to Sears for the bolt removers, but they just twist on the bolt head. It's now stripped round due to repeated attempts to loosen.

Guess I'll try to round up some hardened bits and try to drill the broken tool out. This is turning into an absolute nightmare... thanks, crappy AutoZone tool.
