OM616 Leakdown test

I've got a used OM616 I want to check compression on before I go thru the trouble of swapping it, starter and flywheel not included. Will a leakdown test tell me what I need to know? Is that properly done hot or cold as well? Hot is easily done- point a torpedo heater at it and have a beer, or I could feed it hot water w/ a hose.

Also, oil pressure sender was cut, so won't pump oil or develop pressure. How much care do I have to take rotating the engine when I check/set the valve lash?

You could squirt some thin Oil through the Glow Plug holes just so that it has some lube and crank it Clockwise a buch of times so that the Cylinders are lubed some.

I have not read of what type of spec you would get back concerning the reading you would get for your Engine and I do not know what type of DIY is available for it either.

However, Harbor Freight used to sell the a Leak Back Tester. If you go to their site write down the number of the Tester and if you look around you can find how to access the pdf of the instruction booklet.

What I can remember from when I read it is that the Piston should be at TDC on the Compression Stroke and that the reading was in a %. Of course you need an Air Compressore and a way to adjust the incoming air pressure (maybe the tester does this).

I have not been able to find my 123 CD Manuals for about 2 weeks now so you will need to ask one of the other members to look up the spec for your Engine. I will give this as an example that I got from a later model online manual.

Checking the cylinder leakage
86 300D 603.960
Engine Temp 80 degrees C
Piston at top dead center on the compression stroke

A maximum leakage is 25%

10% from the Valves and Cylinder head and 20% from the Pistons and Rings
[Since the above totals 30% I took it to mean that the above sentance ment the max allowed out of each area by itself. I also guess that the only way you could determing wich area was leaking the most would be to test it and get a total %; pour in some thick Oil to seal the Pistons/Rings and the next reading you get shoud be the % leaking from the Valves/Cylinder head.]

I hope someone will give you the specifics as it should be in the manual.

To set the valves turning the engine by hand should not be a problem.
But I would not do it with the starter and I would be sure all the glowplugs were out...you do not need pressure on bearings which are not being lubricated...
What is the ' oil pressure sender' ...?
Why would cutting IT cause the engine to not be able to pressurize the oil and send it to the bearings ? Or do you just mean you can not SEE the pressure on a gauge due to the sending unit being cut ?

the specs for the leakdwon test are:

max of 25%
max of 10% at the headgasket and valves
max of 20% at the pistons and rings

should be done at operating temp

May be wrong but I thought an oil line went from the filter unit to the oil gage in the cluster. My impression is that I would paint my walls black if I ran the engine like this.
