I have a small one under the driver's seat. But I don't think it would help against lpg.

I always carry a fire extinguisher. Those gasoline cars have a tendency of catching on fire and it's concidered neighborly to pull over to put out others' fires. Had to do it few times already.

If you shoot some C02 or halon down the intake it will starve the engine of air/oxygen and it will stop a runaway! (Do not use a dry chem as it will ruin your engine . . .) Great thread by whunter Run away diesel, why does it happen? |

don't lift hood
It's counterintuitive, but don't raise the hood all the way if there is a fire in the engine compartment. You'll just introduce a huge amount of fresh air. If possible, just lift the hood enough to get the extinguisher in there and blast away. Might as well empty the thing. A big problem is that engine compartment fires often melt the hood latch cable housing making it unusable.

I have carried an extinguisher in each car for years, fortunately never had to use it.
Consider carrying a Halon(R) or CO2 extinguisher; I once used a dry-chemical unit to put out a fire aboard a sailboat (alcohol stove problem) and it made a terrible mess. We were cleaning white powder out of the galley for weeks afterwards! One forum member recommended NOT carrying the fire extinguisher in the trunk. If you are rear-ended, you may not be able to get into the trunk. Since then, I carry my emergency supplies on the floor of the back seat. Jeremy

I have them in all my vehicles.
Just this week on the way to Augusta Me, I saw two separate car fires. One was a Dodge Dynasty that committed suicide over FIAT buying Lee Iaccoca's company and the other was so far gone I could not even identify it. I had an engine fire once in my '67 GTO -- I was driving it back from the shop where they had installed a new exhaust, but had left a rag on one of the headders! Luck I had my big old CO2 extinguisher in the trunk. I have never driven without one since...

Mine is dry chemical. Hope it doesn't make too much of a mess if I ever have to use it.

I am thinking that CO2 will extingish the fire, but the thermal shock will make that engine go ByeBye. A close friend was in the Navy, mech on boats 50' - 100' with Detroit Diesel 2 stokes. If the oil line fail to the turbo, a runway is not uncommon. He could not get anything to cover the air inlet, but did emptied a CO2 extingisher. Killed the engine, permanently.
The 2 stokes are not as robust of cylinders with their O-ring & kits, I will look for something else to block off the air.

Got a Halon tank.
Don't know about your car, but my intake is all bolted together and fresh air is sucked in the passenger side fender, somehow. In a runaway emergency, I'm not going to be unbolting things. I guess I could practice where to shoot up from the wheel well.. I wouldn't have to open the hood this way. Somebody mentioned I could pull the PCV hose going into the snorkel pre-turbo.. but again.. getting hands near fast fan blades in a panicky situation is less than safe. I'm thinking, installing the extinguisher under dash on passenger side / footwell area, and pre-running a long hose into the engine bay, into the intake... sealed nicely. Pull the trigger from the car and squeeze. If the emergency is not your run away, make it so the extinguisher can be quick-disconnected from the long hose to be used for something else.

Run away diesels can fuel themselves off the engine oil. Seen this happen! if you don't have something to put in the intake like a phone book or towel or various pieces of clothing, Run like Hell. It will not be pretty!
