99 E300 722.6 trans compatability

Greetings.. I have a 99 E300.. trans is done. I am looking for a used replacement but I have heard some of the 722.6 trans out of these cars have different internal gear ratios. If you get the wrong trans, you will get a check engine light. I am wondering if this is true, and can it be resolved with replacing the TCM with the matching transmission? Anyone know if any 98-99 trans will work definitively? Thanks, John

My understanding is the models are rated for various power output of the engine they are mated to. The model designation is actually 722.6XX where the XX is a number which differentiates the different ones. Go to the site:

http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

Enter your VIN and it will tell you the model and serial number of your transmission. Then you can look for a replacement with the same model number.

Our diesel 722's are all dot 608's.

Thats all I will say "definitively".

any 722.608 tranny will work. they made small changes to the tranny as the years went on such as removing the drain plug for the torque converter, changing the thick thickness of the friction, steel discs and plates.

His question is which models received the same trans........ I'm fairly certain the E320 and E420 were NOT dot 608's, but that E55's may have been. But, I will not say any of that definitively.

lol I answered his question and give some changes to the 722.6XX series over the years.

E320 uses the 722.607
E430 uses the 722.669
E55 uses the 722.624/636

I have heard that even though it may be a 722.608, it may not work properly with my specific car as there were versions with different gear ratios. Is there any truth in this? Doesn't sound right to me??

The answer to the last question is no. There is really only two different transmissions. The large nag and small nag versions. The large nag comes in the V8 and v12 and higher horsepower cars. The small nag comes in all the 4 and 6 cylinders other than the c32 and c36. As far as internal differences from model to model the only thing is one more friction and steel in the b2 on the 722.608 and the smaller engine cars. It is identical to the 722.607 out of an e320. I would probably not use one out of the 4 cylinder cars as it would be a little weak for the long term as they have fewer clutches and this could eventually cause a problem, although it would work for a while. You can definitely use a trans from the E320 though. Even if the bellhousing is incorrect you can just swap the bellhousing from one transmission to the other. I would probably do this as I would get a later model trans. Something in the 2000+ year ranges. Their were lots of updates to the transmissions that make them considerably better in the post 2000 production. You should pay no more than 1500.00 for a used lower mileage transmission.

Good luck.
