OM617 injection pump removal

I am helping somebody remove an injection pump off of a om617 n/a in a '76 300D. We removed the injector lines, fuels and oils lines, The three nuts that hold it to the block and a bolt that was on the backside of the pump right by the oil filter housing, The pump is very loose, It moves side to side and twists back and forth but will not come all the way out. Are there any step by step instructions I can go by?

in order to remove the pump, you must remove the oil filter canister.

I am under the impression that removing oil cooler lines is riskier than removing the canister.

I saw a car at the JunkYard, a 82 300SD. The IP had been removed without removing the Oil Filter Housing and it looked like it had been done in the Junk Yard.
Next to the Car I found the Vacuum Shutoff (that turned out to be no good). I believe the person who removed the IP removed the Vacuum Shutoff 1st to allow more room to remove the IP.
I do not know if it works or not. If you try it please Post the results.

The Factory Service Manual tells you; you need to remove the Oil Filter Housing to get the IP off.

I can only remember 1 Member who cracked his Oil Filter Housing removing the Oil Cooler Hoses. The Fittings that the Hoses screws into on the Oil Filter Housing are Steel.
When you remove the Hoses use 2 Wrenches; 1 to keep the fitting in the Oin Filter Housing from rotating.

you need to remove the bracket which is at the back of the IP from the block and the pump.
you do not need to remove the oil filter, it will tilt up and out. I removed nothing else, aside from the 4 nuts/bolts that hold the pump, and the bracket at the rear(this is also where a throttle return spring is mounted)

I have done it @ the PNP, no problem. the best part was getting to the checkout- they say:"What's that thing?" me-"fuel injection pump"- "Ohh- lets see here- OK, here we go- that will be twelve dollars" I paid with a quickness and got outta there before they changed their mind.

I said injection pump at the PNP and they charged me $49 plus deposit. I would have left it but it was an M-Pump. I only removed the 4 bolts and all of the lines and pulled it out.

Wow, I'm batting 1000 lately...

Are you guys all doing this with the oil lines still attached to the canister?

Are the pumps splined on these ? Should the engine be turned to a certain position for easy re installment ? Any worries of the chain gear dropping into the abyss ?

Sorry about all the questions this will be the first one Ive pulled.

Pump is splined with a short spacer tube that usually comes out with the pump.

Chain, sprocket and intermediate-shaft stay in engine, and is supported by its own bearing....

Thanks Alastair ! Just like you said . It is a PITA with the oil canister on but can be done .

The small lower pump bracket at the rear was a b**ch with the canister on , But maybe easier than trying to hook the turbo oil line back up afterward if oil canister is removed .

If it's a 1976 car then the oil filter is below and not topside.

It's actually a W123, I said '76 cause that's the manufacture date of the car. The 76's are the W115 right?
