Amazing Vitnage Diesel Find(s)

Thought I’d share this story – you guys will appreciate it
So I am asked to go see some old cars in a farm 10 miles from me. I like old cars so I say why not. His barn yards are full old ford trucks, Volvos of all years and two diesel Lincoln Mark VII’s , :eek:which I did not know even existed. Internationals and jeeps with a few izuzu troopers thrown in for good measure. He really like diesels and so when it got around to talking about my diesel Mercedes he tells me he has “several” in the two barns on the back of the farm. We load up into the izuzu and head up to the barns, passing several VW bugs , a fiberglass GT kit car and some boats. Opening the barn there are at least 10 MB’s, all diesels all between 73-79 in various stages of disrepair. Interiors from perfect to missing, engines everywhere. Left that barn and onto the one in the back , at least 10 more sleeping there, also a CE of some vintage , all again in the mid –late 70’s. Mixed in are some trucks of various vintages, more Volvos and a mustang for good measure. He has engines in crates , 4 – 8 cylinder, flat heads and vintage tractor motors.
Suffice to say , I had never seen anything like it. There is a treasure trove of MB parts and possible fix ups. He said he “ drove them all at one point” I am working up some ideas with a buddy of mine, perhaps take 2-3 of the best and make one good one or two or three, or part em. Saw several sets of vintage fogs, the CE had euro front headlights. The saga begins ( again) :D

IIRC it is the same engine that was used on the 84-85 540TD. I hear it had some problems.

Congrats on a great find! Hope to hear more soon. I have friends with 40,000 sq ft empty storage in KY. :)

I will keep you all posted , I am going back in the next week or two and will get an inventory

Hit Man X 06-08-2009 03:02 PM

Yeah the Lincoln had the BMW 2.4L TD, there's a member here with a few of them... they're probably there due to the ZF 4HP22's infamous burning up of the "A" clutch pack

You think he's a character

And you think he is going to sell them. He is sitting on all that old iron because he loves them. When you ask him how many he is going to sell, he will say something like, Hey, I'll sell my kids, my wife maybe, but not these cars. What are ya, nuts or something. You just wait and see!

LaughingGravy 06-08-2009 04:10 PM

Did I ever tell you about this huge fish I hooked once?;)

Seriously, I dream about stuff like that, but then the part of the dream comes where my wife says something about having to pay for school or food or some other such nonsense.

winmutt 06-08-2009 04:35 PM

I have wet dreams about cache's of 123 AMG parts.

strelnik 06-08-2009 04:50 PM

heard this one before

Sounds like my friend who has over 80 cars stashed in California (multiple cities), Wisconsin, Florida, Canada and France.

None are diesels, but he won't even sell me diesel parts or tools!

Lexxani 06-08-2009 04:58 PM

damn.... Im stoked for you!

t walgamuth 06-08-2009 10:11 PM

Fun stuff!

I ran across a fellow like that about 15 years ago. Had all sorts of interesting iron and parts amongst the most memorable, a 53 studebaker disassembled, 53 vette blue streak motor with dual carbs and split exhaust manifold, and in back a 37 cord/ hupmobile in rough shape....

after wandering through a while I had to ask....."say....you married?"

He said no but he used to be. (And this is just too predictable). He said his wife finally said it was her or the cars......

(in unison) .....and then he said "I miss her sometimes".;)

True story including the punch line.

AMG parts cache discovered (many pic's)

To see the actual pic's I took, of them, you may have to register on benzworld.

But they are real, and still exist in time warp condition, with the parts. I have known the man that has them since 1985, near San Francisco...

There are two threads with pictures, that I took last year and this year on separate visits.

Aside from the benzworld posts, they have never been seen on the internet before, because their owner does not like computers.

There could be some other AMG W123 parts in there, besides the springs and W123 euro tail lights (new gray market euro take offs) that I verified, and saw, actually. Maybe some other ones, that would fit, (AMG ones, that is). Lots of brand new AMG wheels in their AMG boxes, untouched and not even inventoried yet.

First visit with camera.

2nd visit with camera. (This time I did verify some W123 AMG springs, brand new ones. And W123 euro headlights and tail lights too ..see actual pic's of them, hereinbelow)

you might be right, when I mentioned ( in a whisper ) the word "sell" he said he would not sell to just anyone, but someone that appreciates the cars , he had a lot of time and effort invested in them to let them go . I guess I gotta win his respect.
