I'm gonna respectfully disagree... there are no places at all for the ends of those shocks to interact with my air filter housing whatsoever. There are no indentations, no holes, no posts, nothing.

They're not polished smooth; on two of them you can see an imprinted diamond pattern that is almost completely intact. They seem to be epoxyed on; when you pry them up they show NO bolt or hole in center or intention for one. Trust me, I poked around a ton! They are more or less intact, but show no sign of ever having had a center post bolt. Maybe a previous owner came up with some interim solution and that's what I'm dealing with, but I have an intact mount -- no breakage or wear at all -- and a housing that has no interaction with it.

Those are the old style "buffers", hexagonal, the new ones are round.
They appear to have broken, as there is a stud on each end. One end screws into the triangle mount, the housing fits on top. Someone may have epoxied them on, but there is no need.
With the air cleaner out, you should see three nuts that hold the half of the broken buffer on.
This may the part you're looking for, the "U" tube.

I'm with you--mine is the exact same way. I really have absolutely NO clue how this was mounted, if it was mounted. When I got it, the thing was swinging all over the place. I don't think they were epoxied, mine are stuck as well. However, I do have ONE mount with threads sticking out of it but there is no hole close enough to mount it in

I don;t mean to be disagreeable, but in the interest of keeping this thread accurate, they're not broken, they never had a center bolt protruding. They meet up with similar hexagonal mounts bolted to the mounting assembly, but both have clear imprinting and both clearly were meant to sit on one another and NOT screw or join in any way. I suppose when they were fresh, somehow their rubber helped them adhere, but both are distinct and separate parts. There never was a bolt protruding. I have one taken apart now and really, the bolt shaft only descends a few mms into the rubber. It is then solid rubber -- or a similar substance, silicon, what have you -- the rest of the way.

I'm not sure I can get the bottom ones off the assembly today, as it's frickin' hot and I don't feel muscly today, so this all may just have been a research project, but in no way did this bolt on. It rested on the mount using two sets of complimentary rubber seats.

Search parts for air cleaner mounts. There is a rubber connector which has a small threaded stud sticking out each end. MB has used them forever. Typically one end sticks into the bottom half of the air filter houseing and takes a small nut that is 10mm wrenchable. The other end threads into the manifold or sometimes a steel bracket. They fail by separating between the rubber and the steel ends. The steel part usually is hex shaped and takes a 17mm wrench to remove. Buy three new mounts and have at it.

Its a little baffiling at first but once you dig into it you will chuckle at how simple it is.

yeah, I do have those new mounts and am good to go once I get the old assembly out, but am just remarking on the fact that the system I inherited does NOT mount, it sits. The mounts I have clearly were not intended to penetrate both the filter housing AND the mount. They are two-parters that simply rely on traction, I suppose, to secure the housing. Very interesting!

Instead of doing this -( (-

They do this -) (-

Looks the the PO did some modification to your air filter. They filled in the area that the air filter mounts bolts through. All Mercedes Benz during this period had them!

yep -- am trying to figure out what else they might have repurposed based on other people's pics and what I can find. I had similiar issues reconstructing some battery stuff; they had installed a shutoff and I had to take it off and figure out why they had it on there. There are a couple of workarounds I'm not crazy about but at least I have great smart help from y'all!

yep, it should be, if I knew what it was called! Searching "air" "tube" and "u" produces no matching part.
