Just being "nice" again? You know, Tyler, we should compare "hunting stories" sometime. You did good while being "nice". Aren't you glad he hasn't accepted your offer?

Got a response this morning with a very polite no, even though he agrees with me that the issues don't warrant his price. He said that he probably won't sell it now.

On the bright side, I haven't found the can of ether in my 240D ... yet. And I think mine has less blow-by, maybe.
I would hope your car has less blowby than this one. The cap got some pretty good air when it flew off. Some Southern and West coast posters don't understand what decent cars are in the land of the rust belt. They see rust, any rust, and its automatically a $500 parts car to them.

I didn't buy the darn thing. I'm leaving right now to go cuss at the 6.9 brakes some more before cleaning up and going to work.

Yes, but we all know that the thought crossed your mind

Please forgive my ignorance. I once owned a '80 240D that I purchased with 94k on the odometer and foolishly gave away when it hit 300,000 miles because I thought its days were numbered. That's been awhile ago now, and I just recently purchased a low-milage '84 190D 2.2 5-spd in pretty much mint condition. (I know better now than to give away a MB diesel when it hits 300k.)

But...what's "blow-by"?

Blow-by are gasses that slip past the rings in the cylinder of the engine and make their way into the crank case, and eventually up and out the breather tube on top of the valve cover. Removing the oil cap with the engine running can show you how much is escaping. A lot is not good (worn rings)....a moderate to small amount is normal, and none is exceptionally good. Of the 4 diesels in my family, two of them have 0 blowby, and two of them have moderate. Mine has always had a fair amount, but it still starts fine even when its super cold out...and it runs great.

Its not always a sign of "impending doom", if the engine starts good cold and runs ok, then its just fine.

Yeah mine wasn't quite that bad ... it had a pretty good airstream coming out the oil cap, and the cap wouldn't sit on the hole by any means ... but it didn't fly off with much power, just kind of jumbled off to the side. When I hold my hand over it, it feels like a very weak hairdryer, not an airgun. The car did start in 20 degrees after sitting a couple days so it can't be that bad, right? My poor Chase ... I'm still going to keep trying, even if the left-coasters think it's a giant paperweight. I could have easily afforded a perfect car if I wanted to find one, but I wanted something with character. I got a little more character than I bargained for, but what can ya do.

Sorry you didn't get the 240d ... but I'm sure you'll find another one soon. You've probably bought another car while I'm typing this.

Man, you are ambitious. I always wimp out before even going to look at cars. I never would have checked out Chase if it weren't for the fact that I knew and was comfortable with the seller. Although it's probably a good thing I'm so gun-shy, because 1) I've already maxed out my car space and 2) I don't think I could ever sell a car. Even though I sometimes curse the 240D for it's diabolical rust attacks, I don't think I could ever let it go. I'd probably be that way about any car I bought. I'd be like a cat lady, only with cars, and social services would have to raid my property. Neuter and spay your diesels, folks ... keep the numbers under control.
