Vacuum pump cover busted, oil in lines.

I lost vacuum two mornings ago, tranny, brakes, locks working well, engine shut off being temperamental. Walked into Office Depot, came back out and voila, no vac at all. Futzed with lines under hood and dash for 1 day, ( incense technique, no luck but did find oil in lines and filter near brake boost) and this am found front nipple busted off the outside cover plate of V. pump.

Fresh metal exposed and I can now see the shaft spinning.

How in the world?
Any tips on part supply for the cover?

Rick

I would just spring for a new pump if you plan on keeping the car.

Were those threads on a used V. pump or on how the pump housing can fail?

How the pump fails and how it can take out the engine.

I did search for a V. pump failure thread and did see some gory pics. I will be ever more attentive once this used one is in and a new one is on my list. I do plan on keeping this amazing jewel and my ( in between jobs) current income status requires the used bandaid for the moment.

Thanks

R
