Here is some info that might clear up W114 vs W115.

Might as well chime in

Hi-
I broke 100 posts this week, so in honor of that amazing achievement, I decided to add my vehicle to the 220D roll call.

My vehicle is off-white (forget the official name and color code) and has seen some good use. My dad bought it from the original owner 20+ years ago and I have inherited it from my dad. It sat at my mom's for 8 years since my dad passed away. And the car started right up after sitting for 8 years. AMAZING. She didn't even need to charge the battery. In hindsight, I probably would have added some oil to the cylinders prior to this first "recent" start, but hindsight is 20/20.

It has ~250,000 miles (odo broke at 217,000). I believe my dad had the engine rebuilt at some point, but that is currently a mystery. Neither my mom nor sister remember that at all, so I am starting to wonder if I am mistaken. I plan to check the compression this weekend. If the compression is up, I will stick to my guns that it has a rebuilt engine. If it is low (which is looking likely given the hurricane of blowby), I am going to have to revisit my teenage memory bank.

My 1968 220D has all the problems described here. Rusty drivers side footwells. Bad dash rheostat. Rusty truck. Leaky window seals. Cracked dash. etc etc etc. But the center heat fan works. Whoohoo!

Some more specifics... my car has manual windows, no power steering, no AC, etc, BUT (and I know I am in the incredibly minute minority here), I am happy to announce it has an automatic transmission. I really wouldn't want it any other way. Driving any 220d is an adventure and forces you to have a more relaxed perspective on life. And driving an auto simply adds to the experience. It would be too easy to drive a car which actually was in the gear that you wanted at a given moment in time. My car seems to randomly choose your gear, so you just learn to take what comes. Very zen.

Despite its flaws, I LOVE this car. Driving it is a blast and it reminds me of my dad. My wife and I have a two year old and another baby on the way, and with any luck, they will learn to drive in this car. It has made it 44 years, so another 14 more is a drop in the bucket.

Add me to the list

I have a "new" (to me) 1972 220D in either some kind of light beige or light ivory. The color is a very subtly noticeable shade darker than my 1978 300D which is light ivory.

Interior is a very rich dark chocolate color. I'll have to get all the option codes and figure out what everything is.
The interior is almost fantastic. Some very small tears on the driver seat. One single small crack in the dash that looks like a straight line cut at the factory.

Manual windows, manual transmission, no AC of course, no power steering.

Extraordinarily small amount of rust which will soon be repaired.

I love the car and i've only had it 2 days.

Just found this as I was searching for info on 220D starting problems.

I have a 1970 220D. My Dad purchased the car new. It is a very clean car. Repainted stock color in 1995. Always garaged. No rust. Have the original purchase invoice
from the dealer in San Francisco.
Mileage - 150K
Issues - not starting currently working on this
Fun to drive car.
