Question for the B100 crowd

I know that this stuff has some amazing cleaning
properties as it has been said many times here
about the need to change filters several times after
the switch.

But, My question is, if left to soak, will it clean light
rust off of metal?

I have not read of it eating rust off; if you mean down to the bare metal.

Yes, that is what I am looking for.

I have a fuel tank (gas)that has very minor rust inside due to
sitting empty for a long period of time. I thought maybe
B100 would clean it.

won't clean rust

B100 will not touch rust. The cleaning action of biodiesel is due to solvent action similar to other organic solvents such as lacquer thinner or varsol. If you want to remove the rust you will have to use some sort of acid, fairly dicey but can be done. You can also send the tank out to a place like Redistrip , they do electrochemical rust removal. Cheers Dan

If you strip the rust out of the tank and do nothing else it will rust again.

They sell a liquid that you pour into your empty cleaned tank (several companies make them) to line the whole tank. Some claim you can do it with rust in the Tank.

I have not used it to remove rust and it would not work anyway. I have used it to remove carbon deposits from the cabin blower fan armatures and it worked like a dream

Just say no to sealer

If there is ever a chance that the tank will see any Biodiesel I would not put any type of sealer in it. I have yet to find any sort of paint or sealant that will stand up to Bio. It eats almost everything including some types of plastic and lots of kinds of rubber. If you get the tank cleaned it won't need sealer just put diesel back in and you are good to go. Cheers Dan

What I got from post #3 is "I have a fuel tank (gas)"; so I assumed it was a gas tank that would be holding gasoline. So I did not see a problem using liquid tank liner.

Correct.

Ok, Full story. I am restoring a 1980 Yamaha XS 400 that sat
for about 3 years. Remanufactured carbs were extremely hard
to find and very pricey when I did find them.
rebuilding the old ones was not an option as the tips of the needle
valves had broken off in the seat and proved impossible to remove.

This is possibly the last set of carbs this bike will see, and I want
to make dam sure the tank is clean and sealed.

I will be sealing with por15, but want to get the light rust out first.
I was hoping B100 would do it.
Any other suggestions?

Por15 makes a whole rust removal and stabilization system which should work fine for most light rust situations

sealer

My bad. I have used various types of sealers on the insides of Motorcycle tanks some rusty some not. They invariably do a decent job of holding down the loose rust & crud to stop it from getting into the carbs. You can remove some of the rust prior to sealing by using a handful of small nuts and bolts and shaking them around in the tank like a maraca with some solvent , pouring it out and repeating until the solvent drains out clean. Cheers Dan

POR-15's tank restoration system IS biodiesel compatible. I called and asked them - and they have tested it.
