Starting problems
I have a 1982 240d, about three weeks ago I used some moly lube and cleaned out the engine, since then it has been getting harder and harder to start, once its warm it starts up fine, but if it sits all day it was hard, then last week I ran the battery dead trying to get it to start, the only thing is, there was a smell under the hood like something got fried, I know it needs to have valves ajusted, I also was planning to get an oil leak taken care of so over last weekend I did that but when I tried to turn it over it did it for a bit and then nothing the engine wouldn't turn over at all, tonight I'm going to adjust the valves and check the glow plugs. I have a sinking feeling its the starter. I read in one post that worn out engine mounts caused starter to go bad how do I check the engine mounts?

Difficult Starting
1.Forget the nonsense about "Bad Motor Mounts" killing a Starter.
(The Starter is Directly Bolted to the Engine/Transmission Assembly... You could take the Assembly out of the car and put it on the ground... put power to the starter and she'd crank over) You kill an aged Starter by "Cranking the Hell Out of It" . It is NOT a "Continuous Duty Rated" Electric Motor. [You gotta let it "Rest" and cool off.] (10 seconds Is a Looooooooooong time) IF the Starter's Toast, (It may need to be dis-assembled and cleaned. Years of "Brush Dust" buildup will help disable the Starter) you can get parts and rebuild it yourself or buy a Genuine Bosch ReMan. Or be really "crafty" and visit your local recycler's yard for a replacement. http://www.wai-wetherill.com/products/partimage.cfm?wai_num=2-1270-BO 1.Valve Adjustment AND 2.Glow Plug System Assessment/Replacement. Will "Fix" your Mercedes. One of these may be your problem: http://www.wai-wetherill.com/products/partimage.cfm?wai_num=59-9109 http://www.wai-wetherill.com/products/partimage.cfm?wai_num=61-9105 WAI is not a retailer... But any good electric shop should be able to get your parts. See All the parts for yours are readily available: http://www.wai-wetherill.com/products/sresult1bom.cfm?ManufName=BOSCH&item=0-001-362-600 Click on the Blue parts#s for pictures and descriptions. "Cleaned out the engine" ??? Are we talking about Lubro Moly Diesel Purge ? (In the Fuel System?) If not ...Let me Berate you some more...Never,never,never put ANYTHING in your Motor Oil! A Semi-Synthetic Blend oil for 500 miles ,followed by a Full Synthetic oil change will scour All the Crap out of your old engine without ANY damage! Disclaimer: New Oil Filter @ each Change

wired starter back up wrong
well, here is where I am,
New glowplugs and new starter, but I made a mistake and have no idea what to do now, I checked glowplugs and they were bad, replaced and started, it turned over started and died, tried to start again nothing, until thirty minutes later, so I blew the starter took it out, replaced it but forgot which wire went were hooked negative and positive up wrong, found this out when I reconnected to the battery and the motor tried to start, hooked them up right, but when I went to start it no dice. no dash lights, ignition lights, glowplug light and when I turned the key nothing. its like the instrument panel is dead, I checked the fuse box the fuses appear to be fine, did I blow the whole panel, or is there a fuse somewhere that I have no idea about? make sure you hooked up the wires correctly and the alt is plugged in.

I think he means Motor Clean, I've used it, it took care of the excessive blow by.
I use a cocktail in the oil. I was at the dealer once and saw an oil service list, with the premium service they add MOA, so do I and the recommended amount of Tuf Oil. I have been doing this for the past six years. That second pic has me confused!
