Flywheel bolt size + Tightening torque
Anyone know the thread size & pitch for the waisted bolts that clamp the flywheel on an OM616?

Hmm. Tried my 10x1 tap, but it didn't feel good.

Why are you chasing the threads? Did you have a damaged flywheel or something? That number is from the FSM. So maybe you need to compare the tap with your bolts to get a definite answer if someone else doesn't chime in.

Sounds like someone didn't believe in torque values. Those are stretch bolts btw. His may have been overstretched, I have heard it is possible for them to self strip if reused to many times.

FYI, I have encountered bolts that were in so tight that it was flat out impossible to rotate them without stripping the socket side of the bolt off. I was forced to grind the heads off to pull the driven plate or flywheel off, but the vibration of grinding always loosened them so they could be removed by hand! Don't know if it was a fluke on the two cars I did it on, but it was a nice surprise the get all ready to go through all the BS to remove them, and have them screw right out.

Right at the top of the page in the BUY PARTS tab. This does help to support the Forum. Don`t you know?

That is odd. I've pulled 5 manual trans from benzes so far without this problem.

How necessary is it to replace them? It's like $75 for 12.

Answer
Critical, they are torque to yield = when re-used they fail.

Let me edit this, never had a problem with the deep socket surface flywheel bolts, but those shallow socket surface auto driven plate bolts I hate. Had to grind a number of those off on the the two removals in question

I only got two to loosen properly on my 617, the rest rounded off. It's important to use a high quality 12point 12mm socket, otherwise the torque is just too much.
I cut off the remaining 10 bolts with my torch, and then the remains just unscrewed. Once you take the torque off a bolt, the thread bind goes away, and you can spin them by hand. |
