w123 whistle on or just after load???

Keyboard diagnostics?

Could it be turbo related???? like maybe the turbine coasting or spinning down after load??

Looks like you are talking about the 85. Are the EGR and ARV systems still hooked up on that car?

Mine was whistling like you described. Annoying as hell! I removed and plugged the lines for those 2 components (not needed) and the whistle is gone.

Also check the elbow that runs from the air cleaner to the front of the turbo. If it is loose on the turbo side you will get some whistling. But only under load and it is barely audible.

I was told by a mechanic that this was normal for an 85. My car has always done this for as long as I've known her.

I've disconnected EGR and ARV though...and my connection to the air cleaner is a little different.

I'm fairly certain MB would not consider that "normal". Maybe time to look for a new mechanic?

I just went through this with my '85 wagon. I was also about 6lbs down on boost.
The answer is in this thread:

Turbo is whistling, down on boost.......

Like I said in my first post. Best to just plug both of those things and remove the associated hardware and tubing.

It makes for a much simpler vacuum system under the hood.

It would also not be a "bad idea" to pull the intake and clean it.

Well that certainly makes a lot of sense!

I'm still mystified by the whole EGR and turbo relationship on the 85. I was attempting to fix a myriad of other electrical related problems recently and finally decided to try replacing the OVP even though the fuse wasn't bad. Tach sprung to life, most other things were resolved, and more importantly MY TURBO CAME BACK! I had forgot what it felt like! I'm assuming no power to the EGR somehow disables the turbo (even though it's vacum based? )

What's odd is that the car was not smoking at idle before and now it's smoking a decent amount, as well as blowing out some nice sooty smoke when the turbo kicks in (I missed that too ) But how would the EGR affect anything at idle or before the turbo boost kicks in?

Actually the T was when I was testing. I put the semi-permanent BB in the vac hose and plugged it back into the ARV on the front of the turbo.
85's are such fun, but it sure does run and shift well.....
