I gave my daughter my 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier (still looks new inside and out at 180,000 miles) and am paying her insurance and gas while in college...and a big chunk of her college expenses. This weekend I put new rotors and pads on it and a M1 oil change.

The thing is, she had a very rough time in high school and has made a 180 degree turn around while in college. It is rare if she does not bring home straight A's in her major of Biology with a Neuroscience minor. She is very appreciative of what we give her and knows it allows her to better concentrate on her studies. She also puts in quite a few hours at her Starbucks job and her summer internship at the University. Next year she graduates but is now looking at Grad schools on the West coast. Can you tell that I am proud of her?

I haven't even started talking about my son who graduated from Johns Hopkins and this year from Duke University.

My daughters have a love/hate relationship with their cars....the LOVE the freedoms, HATE the responsibilities that go along with it.

I gave them the cars, they have to pay for all repairs, maintenance, fuel, insurance, inspections and registration. It's amazing at how much better they care for them. I do perform the labor for the maintenance and repairs though.

OldWolf - You have a right to be proud

I gave my parents all sorts of trouble in high school and somehow got into a decent college where I grew up a LOT, something about going off on your own makes you realize how good you had it. My parents never paid my gas and insurance though!

I told my kids I would pay for half of whatever car they wanted that they could pay cash for the other half. My son had no interest in paying for anything. My older daughter saved from the time she was about 14 and bought a Ford Explorer. The younger daughter is 17 and has yet to take me up on my offer.

By making them pay for ahlf, I felt I could teach them some responsibility as well as taking pride in something they had earned themselves. It's easy to give things to your kids, but I think you give them something far more valuable by letting them earn it for themselves.

I definitely think making them pay for their own mistakes goes along way to teaching responsibility. And that includes attorney fees. Like I said, 180 degree turn around.

I was also half-funded on my car, which became mine when I graduated high school (over 5 years ago!

) But that was all, since then I've paid for all of it.

I might pay half (or give if its a cheap car) for my kids....but that's it, they'll be paying everything from there on. I'm not in the business of handouts.

People that grew up getting everything handed to them annoy me....they have no scope or idea what it takes to earn $$ to acquire or maintain something....just no idea about money in general. Kids that get stuff handed to them seem to get into more trouble, and do not appreciate stuff they have.

My cars were essentially "free" to me. I got the 190E from my grandpa when he died, because he knew I loved that thing to death. Norm was of course paid for for my project.

My mom pays for insurance, and that's it. I pay for gas/diesel, any work I do to the cars, registration, etc.

It makes me really appreciate what I have.

I was lucky enough that my dad helped me purchase my 300E which was my first real car. I was so happy and even with the things that went wrong, it was totally worth it. I waited my entire childhood to drive, especially a BMW or Mercedes! When I was 3-4 my parents tell me I would roll around in my toy chests with wheels and draw the Mercedes and BMW logos on them. When I was like 7-8 we had these stools that had rotating seats, I would line up 4 chairs in the configuration of a car and put the stool in front of me like a steering wheel and just sit there and pretend to drive.

My dad is so awesome, and I'm so grateful he helped me out with it. The only time I got really frustrated with it was when the Transmission went out. it took me about 2 months to save up the money to have it replaced. I love cars and driving.

I got my parents old van that they used to drive me to elementary school in. Free. They told me it was mine to drive but i keep it up. All repairs and maintenance were funded through me and I loved that heap of a van. I sold it last year and I regret it sometimes. My older brother bought two used hondas and financed two of my younger sisters for them. It will be a cold day in hell when they can make a payment on those. He got burned. They just want to drive it and put gas thats it. They dont pay for insurance and they let it break down before it gets fixed. When the day comes that I have kids and they want a car, they will have to earn the cash and maybe ill help them out. ill of course help them do maintenance things and small repairs though,

Priceless! When I entered college I couldn't believe how many extremely spoiled people there were...Not sure why they're even in college to tell you the truth, a lot wouldn't even be able to hold down a job because "it would suck too bad". 90% doomed for corporate America.

That day isn't too far off for my oldest (almost 12).

My father did buy my first vehicle, an '79 F100 with the ventilated bed option. If I wanted something else, pay for it. Insurance and fuel I was on my own. Maintenance and repairs, I paid for parts and he'd help me if I asked. After my first speeding ticket he kicked me off his policy (up to that point I paid the portion for me) and I was completely on my own. I paid more for straight liability in 6 months than I pay for all 3 cars now, 2 with full coverage.

My son will learn many of the same lessons, although I think I'll offer to go halfsies with him on the vehicle purchase with some limitations.

It's funny, my parents really never taught me anything about money or self-sufficiency. They wouldn't even let me get a job in high school when I wanted to earn my own money. Yet somehow I still ended up being very frugal and hard-working. Guess I learned by example ... my dad has always worked as hard as anyone I know, and both my parents are very frugal themselves. So I learned a lot by watching, I guess.

I will take that little bit of info. to heart as my daughter is only a couple years behind my oldest son. I really try hard not to pigeon-hole or be too traditional but sometimes it just turns out that way. My sister is very self-sufficient around cars and motorcycles thanks to my father and I hope to be able to pass that onto my daughter.

My brother, sister and I were taught to drive on a standard and were required by my father to take our driving tests with a standard vehicle. It amazes me that my 30yo BIL has never driven one and doesn't know how to drive one. I've started getting my wife out in my Jeep so she can at least get used to it even if not exactly comfortable with it.
