Where's my inline fuel filter on my OM617?

Silly question, but I can't seem to find the inline fuel filter in my crusty engine bay. Can anyone point to it for me, please?

Follow the line to the right of the primer pump up to where it connects to the hard line going to the tank (over on the inner fender well).

It looks like you may not have one or it is hidden below the hard line that goes to the tank.

From your photo it sure looks to me like someone just decided you didn't need one and removed it

It is supposed to be before the inlet (which is the hose on the right side of the lift pump). From your photo it looks like the hose goes right into the pump but there is supposed to be a stub of fuel line there and the inline filter would go right before that inlet fitting.

I don't see it either. At least you have nice looking fuel lines and a newer style primer pump.

Time to re-introduce the primary filter. You will need two additional clamps as well.

Interesting. Is there supposed to be an inline filter underneath the car by the gas tank as well?

Also, can someone snap a photo of his inline filter in situ, please?

Many thanks to everyone for their help here.

If you have a gas tank on that car, make sure you don't route the contents to the engine.
The OE system has no filter under the car upstream from the primary filter, just a screen inside the fuel tank.

No need for a pic. The filter goes in the rubber fuel line that goes
from the steel tank line to the primer pump......That would be the line
closest the fire wall on the pump.

I would put about an 8" piece of fuel line coming straight up off the
primer pump to the filter. then loop a piece from the filter to the
steel line.

Originally there was only about 3" between filter and pump, making for
a few burnt knuckles if trying to change the filter along the road.
An 8" piece makes it much easier.

Doug, just curious how many times have you had to change the bolt-on filter? And/or how long has it been running starved for fuel? It isn't a good idea to run it without that primary inline, but the secondary HOPEFULLY caught everything--it clogs pretty quickly though.

Here are pics of my '83.
Some folks get their undies in a bunch if you don't use the "proper" terminology.
I find it sad when folks who are trying to ask a question get raked over the coals because they are not as familiar with some terms and that some others think that is blasphemy.
Weren't you born knowing this? Come on people.

Thank you all for clearing that up. I haven't had the car all that long and it's been hibernating all winter, so I'm just putting it back on the road.

I've actually never done any of this service, so I'm learning as I go along. I've driven the car a couple of thousand miles without incident, but
I'll definitely re-install an inline filter as per the specs in this thread.

So what is the size of that odd bolt on top of the canister fuel filter? I thought it was 19mm, but it's an odd one.

Looks like I'll need the proper copper washers as well. They weren't in the box along with the Bosch filter.

Again, thanks. So much to learn here.....

No reason to get sad over a joke, unless it helps in unknotting undies.
